I never knew this was a BP thing! I hate taking showers and never knew why! I went an entire year doing nothing but baths and just assumed that it's what I prefer.
That's so strange to read that so many others with BP are experiencing the same thing. I always chalked it up to having to stand in the same place moving my arms and such. I completely prefer to be sitting in the water than having to stand with it falling on me. I hate the work after the bath/shower. Drying off, lotion, fixing hair, choosing clothes, getting dressed... Just a bunch of work that I don't like. |

I can easily go days without showering if my partner is out on business and I'm left alone.
I just don't really like to do it, because it is a chore for me now and it's easier to just not do it and continue my hanging out around the house. I try and cycle shirts when I force myself to go to class (but then again, if I didn't spill something on it or it doesn't smell, why change it?) , but I don't change my jeans except for maybe every week or so? Probably not the best of habits, but I do what I can do.

I'm so gonna tell my psychiatrist and my therapist that this thread got over 300 responses so they'll get off my back about showering more often. They think because I don't shower I'm automatically depressed, but I haven't showered regularly since adolescence. Plus I make sure I don't smell bad.

This is one thing I've actually never had issue with. I love my daily shower.

I have no idea if I'm actually bi-polar or not, but I have had a shower situation too! I don't know that I'd say its really a specific aversion to showering, but I find myself just not doing it. Especially lately. There is always something better to do - in the morning I've got kids to get ready and take to school, and at night I could be watching tv, or sleeping, or playing solitaire mindlessly until my brain stops racing so I can finally fall asleep. I've found the same thing with brushing teeth. I never really thought about it at all, but personal hygiene IS hard for me, even when I'm not feeling depressed. I like the comment I read earlier that when depressed we can't be bothered, and when manic we have better things to do... That resonates with me.

i don't like to shower. i used to be an everyday shower kind of girl but over the years it has gotten less and less. i hate getting undressed for it, hate that cold feeling when you're done and step out, hate how the water is never quite the right temp, either too hot or too cold. i would rather be relaxing or sleeping bundled up in blankets. showering feels like such an effort. it's always quite the talk with myself about whether or not i really have to. whether i could get away with another day going without or if hubby or kids or whoever will notice and think gross. same with shaving.

Because there is no public bath room in the neighborhood. Otherwise I must rush to wash my head, which has been full of dandruffs.
I really hate to stay at this house not only broken but also dirty. No access to warm bath in a clean and sound bath room is most depressing thing in winter. |

I never realized this could be a bipolar issue. I thought I just hated showering. I don't shower everyday and sometimes I go so long I can't remember when I showered last. When I do finally shower I run the hot water out... I hate being wet. I hate drying off... I hate the way my clothes feel right after showering... Ugh!

I don't shower everyday and only brush my teeth in the morning usually. This is strange how it could possibly be a BP thing.. i am not convinced but it is interesting to think about..

I think way to much.
Showers actually scare me! I imagine the hot water tank shorting out and having 240 volts course through my body. |
