What you said does make sense, physiologically. As one gets older, hormone levels decrease, and especially as a women, after menopause these hormones that may or may not have been a contributing factor to your condition decrease completely.

I'm a middle aged guy. Hormones probably contribute. I went bald at early age. I have seen a well known dr. state that some tests have shown that men when given shots of testosterone would thin their hair and once stopped, their hair would grow back. My brother said once I was a hormone basketcase when I was younger. A girlfriend once said that one woman couldn't keep me happy.
