Recently, after noticing a few patterns that may indicate the arrival of another manic episode, I ran out and grabbed the first self help book I saw. But much to my surprise, this book is actually super helpful. The only thing is that she really refers to medication a lot and I do not currently have any prescriptions, a doctor, or insurance. I was wondering if anyone had read this book who also didn't have means to get professional treatment, and how the may have interpreted it. It's a great read if you haven't checked it out. I'm just trying to work around one part of it. For now anyway.

It's a good book. She also focuses on therapy, which I currently can't afford, although I do have access to a psychiatrist. DBT and CBT workbooks help me substitute for therapy.
I think that therapy and medication are both very important. For those who don't have access to either or both, I felt that Fast's suggestions for leading a healthy life -- e.g. balanced diet, taking care of sleep, monitoring thought patterns and triggers, practicing mindfulness, etc. were helpful. If there are other things you want to discuss about the book, I'd be happy to. |
