I've never had to be inpatient before, though there have been plenty of times I kinda wondered if I should have been. What criteria do docs use as to whether you're admitted or not?

Usually if you're an immediate danger to yourself or others, or if you're so psychotic you make absolutely no sense - though not always for that last one.
Danger to yourself generally means suicidal, though I have been admitted because of serious self injury before. I guess when you end up with stitches they figure ok, that's too much. When I was admitted last may it was because I told my doctor I was afraid I couldn't stop myself from hurting myself. At first she was dismissive because she thought I meant self injury, but then she called my therapist in and she mentioned I had been suicidal. Suddenly the doc's tune changed and she damn near committed me.

My center goes Inability to care for basic needs and with no one to help you with maintaining that. Basic needs are :
do you have shelter that you know how to access? are you in taking fluids (or eating anything)? is your cloths weather appropriate and clean (clean meaning no pee or fecal matter)? are you in immediate danger to yourself or others? Can you maintain your basic needs until your next appointment?
