I am getting major hot flashes... I know...welcome to middle age.
I've done research and on Lamotrigne you cannot take primrose oil, or black cohash. I've also tried Sage, but for me it did not work. Does anyone have suggestions? |

A Chillow and a good fan. Hormones will keep you bleeding long after you're supposed to stop, and they're known to raise a woman's risk for uterine and breast cancer. In the meantime, dress in layers so you can take off clothing as you need to (and put it back on when the hot flash is over and you're freezing). Stay away from "hot" fabrics like satin, silk, and polyester---stick with cotton as much as possible. Your bedsheets should be cotton as well.....the kind they use in hotels are wonderful.
In the meantime, remember that like everything else, hot flashes do pass, and so will peri-menopause. Don't be embarrassed---most women go through them, and they're actually less noticeable to others than they are to us. ![]()

What about at night?
Is the Chillow good for that? |

My husband has the Chillow and loves it. I wish they'd been around when I was going through the night sweats back in the day. And having a fan in every room that you can turn on as needed is helpful too.
I do have to confess to sticking my head in the freezer more than once. ![]()

It is very cold where I live.
We are still going down to -10 at night. In the middle of the night, I've often stood at the door just loving the cold air |

Bizarrely, it is my feet that get the hot flashes!?! I have a bucket of iced water to stick my feet in, I have to do this at work too. I've had one or two hot flashes that have been more conventional but mainly it has been my feet. Also I get sudden chills could that be hormonal too?
I don't want to go down the hormone route and some supplements are risky with meds, so rather than taking a supplement I try to eat a little more of the foodstuffs that are rich in those nutrients, oily fish, pulses, nuts etc. It helps a little.

Original - I feel the same about hormone therapy. I still think that wedon't know enough about it to make me feel safe.
What are pulses? |

Beans, lentils, chick peas, healthy stuff like that.
I'm not a health food freak but I suddenly developed a craving for walnuts last autumn and realised that when I had a handful with my lunch I felt a lot better, since then I've started eating a bit better, nothing radical, just more like the balanced diet we're supposed to eat. It has certainly helped my skin and hair and despite not having had a proper period since November I've only had one full blown hot flash and that was brought on by drinking gin. Two things have made me question hormones. My Mum had breast cancer in her 70s (luckily it responded to treatment) that was oestrogen sensitive and being fuelled by the small amount of residual oestrogen that our bodies produce post menopause. Then last year I had a Mirena fitted to combat heavy bleeding, it was a nightmare. My depression relapsed to a lower point than for many years, my skin flared up like a teenager, my ankles ballooned and I had dreadful migraines. So on the whole, I'd rather let nature take its course and to be honest I won't miss having periods I view the whole thing as a release, it is just the getting there that is a bit of a struggle.

I am going to try the nuts idea.
I always have a little snack in the afteroon, and a wee bit of nuts would be really good |

I feel your pain! My feet feel like they're radiating heat at night! I love my chillow and wish they had a freakin mattress made of the stuff! Summer in the Midwest makes it a living hell too. I want to move to Norway! I agree with dressing in layers. Even thought I have prominent spider veins on my legs, plus I'm pale to begin, but until this ends, I could care less. I know one lady who carried one of those fans (like the ones Geisha carry) in her purse. What I hate the most is that I get mean as a snake during a hot flash and just snap at people which makes me hate myself later.

And, yeah, stay away from hormone replacement therapy ... Natural is best if at all possible ... The worst of mine were over after a year, and let me tell you the truth, I'd rather deal with hot flashes the rest of my life (if I had to) than ever have to deal with the hassles of ever having a period ever again!
