I'm trying to think of different mood stabilizers to look into in case my psychiatrist changes my meds (he should because seroquel isn't working). What are the different mood stabilizers out there? I want to look into these meds before I go to the psychiatrist next week.

Hmmm...trileptal, tegretol, lithium, depakote, lamictal. There's neurontin but they don't seem to be using that much anymore. My pdoc told me abilify was a mood stabilizer but that is off-label use, it's actually an atypical antipsychotic.
There might be more but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

I think it depends on your particular presentation of bipolar. I've read that lamictal is good for bipolar II because it works best on depression. I've read that lithium is good for bipolar I because it works best on mania. I've also read that lithium has showed promise in reducing suicide in bipolar patients.
There are others. I've tried depakote but it didn't really work for me. Neither did lamictal or lithium. I'm relying on a combo now, probably seroquel/abilify.

My psych says I have bipolar 1 (my first said bipolar 2 but things have changed) and I take lamictal and latuda for mood and Neurontin for anxiety. I have taken a lot of meds! Seroquel just made me really really angry! Abilify is used a lot for bipolar depression but Im allergic to it.

I take Trileptal, and it's helped me so far. I like this website's treatment of different mood stabilizers (mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder). It seems that Trileptal's older sister Tegretol is more effective, according to the website, although it comes with more side effects.

I take Geodon, which has worked for the past few years, by itself and in combination with Lamictal. The Geodon is for my mania, and I've been taking lamictal for depression. I just started to decrease because we think it is making me manic.

I've had really good luck with it. One of its best qualities is that it doesn't cause weight gain...I actually lost 30lbs of baby weight after each child.

Geodon has been a mixed blessing for me. It doesn't make me gain weight---in fact, I lost weight when I first went on it---or mess with my blood sugars. Unfortunately, it also doesn't work as well to keep mania at bay, which is why I'm on Zyprexa again. I take Geodon before bedtime with a big spoonful of peanut butter, which provides the fat needed to absorb it without a ginormous amount of calories.

I have bipolar type 1 and I have taken most mentioned with the exception of tegretol and trileptal. Abilify worked great for me and was the first medication to stabilize me but I gained a lot of weight and now I am on lamictal and it is working well and no weight gain. Everyone experiences the medication differently due to metabolization among other things but I sure hope you find the right one for you soon.

I take lamictal. They've upped it several times, but 300 mg seems to be working in a combo with my other meds.
