In my area there is a long waiting list, in years, for this benefit. Some units are very nice to live in, and others not so nice. A roll of the dice I imagine.

Google section 8 for your city or county. Some go by lotteries, some by waiting lists. I think its a matter of getting into affordable housing.
Thanks for this!

You can start by going on line and check for HUD in your area. As r010159 said there are often waiting list, it depends on where you live and the need in your area. You can also call 411 and tell them you are looking for safe affordable housing they might be able to help with some ideas. Also if you have a way to see a SW, you can ask if there are any programs in your area to help those with MI, find safe affordable . There usually is a priority list for need. Most of these programs have a % of your income that you pay, it's something like 1/3 of your income or less. Most apts are more than 50% of disability checks.

So the one thing you will need a lot of is patience, and a lot of it, for this is bureaucracy at its best.

Public housing, and section 8 take 30% of your income for housing. You have to go to your local housing authority to be put on the list. It took us 3 months to get in to public housing and 6 months to get section 8. We are currently on the waiting list for a new area we're number 547 and our estimated wait time is 5 yrs. So it really varies.

I would put in applications to any county or city you are willing to move to. Are you receiving food stamps?

How they determine the actual cost varies from state to state. Some add in utilities others it only adds the rent. Where I live also factors in medical costs and being BP means they use another scale that brings the amount of rent down.
I'm going to be moving to MN if you have sec 8 as opposed to public housing you can transfer it with you. If your medical costs are high you can also factor those in for a deduction but you must keep copies of all your expenses to show proof.

The state I live in also has programs for reducing the cost of your utilities. Can't think of the name but it's though the utility company, I don't pay certain charges and do not get penalized for late payments.

I live in California and have PG&E for my electricity. I get the CARE discount based on my income, and it's a significant decrease. What used to cost almost $300 is just a little over $100.

In my state you don't have to live in designated Section 8 housing. You can get a landlord to agree to take section 8 and they have to agree to section 8 rules but you can get a nice place.
