Hello all
I'm newly diagnosed Bi-Polar. I was put on a low dosage (25mg) of Lamotrigine a few weeks ago and told to step up to 50 mg (25 am/25 pm) after 15 days - I'm being slowly stepped up to my ultimate dosage. I also take Buproprion 200mg and 1 mg of Xanax. Since I started the Lamotrigine, I've been having major issues getting comfortable in bed and getting to sleep. I become restless, uncomfortable, toss and turn continuously. Is this a normal side effect and if so, will it stop once I reach my target dosage, or should I be asking my pdoc for a sleeping pill? Thanks! |

I haven't heard of that as a side effect to lamotrigine. I'm on it and i have no side effects, and usually people tolerate it well. I looked it up, and insomnia is a possible side effect, so it might be the problem for you.

I was taking 300mg of Lamictal for a few years, and there were some nights where I would feel restless and unable to fall asleep. I never attributed it to that med, but I haven't had that problem since I decreased. I also have an easier time falling asleep. I was trying different sleeping pills that would be helpful for me, and Lunesta worked the best for me, as long as I got past the terrible taste it left in my mouth.

Insomnia is listed as an FDA side effect of Lamictal. As each individual has diff. chemistry anything is possible. This is listed as a side effect in 20 percent of people and happened to me. It is because Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and also an antidepressant for bipolar people and the antidepressant qualities of the pill may agitate some.
