BiPolarNurse, you can help me with this too

I have issues in dealing with stress. It can get ugly, but with help, I think I can manage.

I'm an MA and it will take me a year of going Part Time to qualify to apply for the nursing program, but I want to do it. I do not want to be a charge nurse or manager, I just want to care for people and nurses can do a great deal. MA's have too many limitations.

What I'm scared of is my anxiety and self esteem issues. Should I do this?

Go for it! Every nurse has anxiety/stress issues. It's difficult to get an RN & of course it's stressful caring for sick people. But you can do it! If you feel led to this work, you will be a great care-giver.

I say go for it if that's what you want Nursing is stressful, but I love it. There are so many options of types of nursing you can do, and you can always find a job. Nursing school is challenging, so you'll want good self care while you do it, but it is totally possible. I know of 3 other bipolar nurses in person, and there are quite a few nurses on this forum it seems. PM me any time if you want to discuss it more.

I want to do it and I am only going to take classes part time. I have a great therapist. I have to work on myself continually.

I just wish I could get rid of my self doubt.

Of course you can be a nurse! You have the advantage of knowing you're bipolar (which I didn't until only a couple of years ago) and I'm sure you would make a very compassionate nurse. Yes, it is stressful, but again you know yourself and you know your triggers, and as long as you can avoid them for the most part, you should do very well. Go for it!

Only become a nurse if it is something you are passionate about. There's no sense in putting yourself through all that stress and hard work if you'll only end up unhappy. Trust me, I learned the hard way.

Even after my freshman year in the nursing program, I had doubts, but because I had been saying since 10th or 11th grade that I wanted to be a nurse, I felt obligated to continue. I then suffered through my first semester of actual nursing classes and clinicals -- not because it was too hard, and not because I wasn't good at it. In fact, the exact opposite was true. I got the best grades of my life that semester, and I got very high reviews from my clinical instructors. The only problem was that my heart wasn't fully in it.

After quite a bit of hmm-ing and ha-ing, I finally was honest with myself and decided to change my major...and that was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

My mom always questioned if my MI was a factor, and I honestly don't think that it really was. I'm now a psychology major, and just one class away from graduating, and I don't think that there's a better program for me out there. I do what I love and am passionate about, and that is early childhood education, not nursing.
Thanks for this!

You should go for it. Its stressful, but very rewarding. I've been a nurse for 10 years and I love it. Sometimes I question whether or not Im mentally competent to do my job cause my meds have really screwed with my short term memory but I write everything down so I wont forget something important.

I'm trying to get out of nursing now but loved it when I was new at it. My advice though is go for the 4 yr. RN because most hospitals are phasing out LPN's. Nursing homes you will only pass meds and not have time for the patients and it's rush rush rush. You can do anything you put your mind to so GO FOR IT. Bipolor or not, you can do anything!!
Thanks for this!

I've been in the nursing field for a few years now. I enjoy it, but it can be very stressful at times. I have made a personal decision to go back to school though and I am working on a degree in Psychology now. However if you feel you have the passion for it I would say do it, it is so rewarding.
