I was diag. in 1995 with seizures, severe OCD & bipolar (mostly manias). After 5 years of working w/pdoc, MD & neurologist, got onto a good "cocktail" that works for me. Depakote for seizures/manias, seroquel for severe insomnia caused by manias which resulted in hallucinations.
Xanax is the Only thing that quells my horrible OCD. I would leave for work & go back (up a mountain in CO) 5-6 times to check oven, etc. Back & forth. Had to get up at 5:00 a.m. in order to get to work on time at 8:00. Also up in the middle of the night to scrub bathroom with toothbrush, bleach etc. Washing hands endlessly. Carrying lysol in my purse to spray public bathrooms, etc. etc. Tried biofeedback & cognitive therapy. That helped vs. the panic attacks that came w/the OCD. But didn't alleviate the OCD. So have been using the xanax. Medicare doesn't cover it (it does cover my other meds). I am embarrassed to be on xanax but it works & makes my life so much better. Does anyone else take xanax?

I also suffer from OCD as well. Years ago it was debilitating for me. I would wash my hands over 100 hundred times a day, spray lysol on my body, check the stove, etc. It resulted in me attempting suicide. I went thru CBT and it took away a good amount of my obsessions and compulsions. I am in therapy with a therapist who also suffers from OCD. I still have issues that I am working on to this day, and it seems that when one is resolved another is created. I have come a long way with this therapist. I know I will never be cured from this and I will have to work everyday.
I have tried some of the meds for OCD and they cause me to go into mania. I have used xanax several times over the years to combat the anxiety that comes along with OCD. I am trying to understand why you are embarrassed to take xanax? When dealing with a mental illness part of dealing with with illness is with medications. If it makes your life easier then do it. OCD can take over your entire life and if it helps you then that is what you need to do, why suffer? |

My husband had really bad OCD and he took the older tricyclics drug, anafranil...worked awesome! Thought I would mention it in case you haven't tried it. I think you should take what helps you. If Xanax helps you don't be embarrassed to take it. Maybe embarrassment is just a symptom of your anxiety?? I was on klonopin for a while. It worked a little but then stopped. I have found seroquel to be great for anxiety. Hope you feel better.

I take xanax daily for anxiety. I find it also helps keep my mania & mixed states down a little bit. I don't have OCD, but it has certainly helped me. I was a racing, restless mess before xanax.
