Does the music type or style or artist that you listen to change with how your mood is going? For me, I tend toward quieter, more plaintive stuff like Elliot Smith and other acoustic stuff, like the soundtrack to the movie 'Once' that's very stripped down when I'm depressive, and when I'm manic-y i tend to go for Jack's Mannequin, Pete Yorn, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco-things with more of a beat driving them forward. The only things I listen to when I'm up and down, so all the time, are the Avett Brothers and Death Cab For Cutie. What about you?

Generally, I listen to hard-driving classic rock from the '80s and salsa music when I'm high. In depression, it's pretty eclectic.....Evanescence, Beethoven, the soundtrack from Somewhere in Time. I even have a CD that I burned called "Songs for Depression". When I'm down I'll pop that into the computer, put in my earbuds to shut out the outside world, and cry while the music plays. It helps sometimes.

I don't think you need to be bipolar to experience this but for the sake of having an answer...From what I know, when I'm in a good mood (good moods relate to mania in most cases...I assume) I can listen to anything and be happy with it. When I'm in a down mood, I have to listen to something more mellow and down. If you're looking for specifics, when I'm up'ish I listen to Papa Roach/Fall Out Boy/Eminem/Foo Fighters/Classical music sometimes. When I'm down, maybe I'll listen to blues or some of Red Hot Chili Peppers' stuff. When I'm down, I'm not usually listening to music though. And when I'm way far up it doesn't even occur to me to listen to music.
Fast paced when up and slow paced when down...unless it's an angry down, then maybe I'll listen to heavy metal angry stuff. |

Here is a slightly different take on music. If I'm depressed/lethargic & can make myself put some upbeat dance music on, then dance to it, I get lifted up out of the depression somewhat (or a lot). If I'm way too manic & can get myself to put on some soothing music (like those youtube relaxation videoes), I can calm down a bit.
But in general, when depressed, I gravitate toward the Blues. When manic, I can't even think of music usually. But would gravitate toward The Clash or other dissonate tunes

Love the Avett Brothers. When I am depressed don't listen to anything. When I feel better I like lots of oldies from the 70's. Stevie Nicks, etc. And some country. But I am old.

I tend to get fixated on a certain song when I'm manic or depressed. Last manic episode it was "Youth" by Daughter. Then when I crashed it was "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty and "One Song Glory from the musical Rent.
Previous to that, it was the cast recording of Next To Normal, which is a broadway musical about bipolar disorder.

I used to be different, but nowadays all I listen to is upbeat, hard driving manic music. I like happy chill out music too sometimes. No depressing music for me, yuck.
It doesn't matter what mood I'm in, I always like manic music. Then again, I'm mostly manic all the time! Lol. Click the link in my signature, and you will hear my favorite "Mania" music. Fast, intense, euphoric... "Must be the feeling, it brings to you..." Edit: here is the link, if you can't see my sig.

I have three playlists in my phone that I rotate through regularly - rainy days, sunny days, and a positive mind. Rainy days is deep depression, sunny days is hypo/mania, and a positive mind is when I'm down but I have hope it can get better. On rainy days I have a lot of songs about giving up, suicide, self harm, depression, etc. positive mind has songs about not giving up in hard times. Sunny days has upbeat awesome songs, mostly pop punk and ska, that get me dancing when I'm flying high. They all tie in to different mood states. Music has always been that way for me.
