My doc thinks I need.
It would be a break from my elderly mother whom I care for. I am too depressive and need some stimulus. What do you think guys, has any of you gone to a mental institution during a depression, and did it by your own? |

I went in to the hospital a few weeks ago because I was having suicidal ideation. They adjusted my meds and kept me overnight for observation. It was definitely helpful. I don't have any experience with longer stays, though.

Hello, Brazilian. Each of us is different. My thought is your and your therapist must resolve what course of action is in your best interests.
I wish you well. |

I have been admitted twice. The last time being the 19th of July. I was very angry when I was blue sheeted, but when I got there and was put back on medication and had time to reflect it was actually a positive experience. (In an odd way)
Just think of it as a vacation from the crazy world, you never know it might do you good. ![]() |

I have been hospitalized about 5 times in the last year and a half. I have gone in with my wife , my sister and by myself. I did not have a bad time in either of the places I stayed at and the last time I got put on meds that are working for me. I wish you the best of luck and if you go in take full advantages of all the groups they offer. Good luck.

I was hospitalized 7 times in last two yr and 2 before that. It can be very helpful! Not everytime did I go by myself or voluntary but most of the times were a good thing!

Every time I've been hospitalized I've gone on a 72 hour hold and then I've been voluntary after that, except once I was put on a 3 week hold, and during this last one, after a week I said I was leaving and they threatened to put me back on a hold, so I stayed.
I find the level of helpfulness varies depending on the hospital. Some of my voluntary stays have been helpful, some have not. Usually they just keep me a few weeks and change my meds around. Some of the hospitals I've stayed in don't even have therapy, you're just sitting around doing nothing.

i've always gone voluntarily but I knew I really needed it.
Caring for an elderly relative can be way overwhelming. Can you call some places and see about respite care for your relative? They often have free "eldersitting" so you can go out. Is there anyone in your family, friends, or neighbors who could give you an hour's or so break? Many good thoughts to you.

I've not had a positive experience with impatient hospitalization. That said, it helps many people so go for it if you need it. Give it a try. I have a great pdoc that I see monthly and returns calls on the same day, etc. For me that's more effective. Take care and give the hospital a try if needed. It may help you a lot. xox
