When my depressive cycles or anxiety get bad and I need something to distract myself from destructive or sad thoughts, I have some things I always revert to so I can escape. Usually it's playing music, reading, video games, or watching Youtube videos.

What do you guys do to distract yourself? Does it work?

Pipe smoking, listening to music, watching movies, and surfing Internet. Yes, I find these distractions help me.

Reading and writing have successfully distracted me many, many times. It's definitely helpful.

Music. Listening and producing. I get lost in it.

If I'm too up or down to read, mindless video games works.

Definitely tv shows. I get really engrossed in the storylines and it just helps to take me out of my depressive reality for a little while. Obviously this isn't healthy in the long run.

When i feel like that i find watching tv or playing online poker and other games distract my thoughts. Listening to music doesnt work for me as words in the song often trigger a strong negative emotion. Reading is great. I can get lost in a book and forget about my thoughts. Coming on here helps me too

Putting on acid jazz and writing computer code, there is something about going into my cocoon of code that helps me forget that I want to drive my car into the (*^( or that the world is against me.

I get involved in the moment, by practicing some DBT skills, and then play on my iphone or just love on my kids...best of luck!

Reading, movies, browsing online.

It is much easier for me to use escapism now than it was a couple of years ago. It was the worst because I was so trapped in myself and nothing could make it better.

It eventually got better. I don't exactly know how -- gradual change and the right medication, I guess. Now I over-rely on escapism, but I find that better than before.
