Hi everybody,
New here but wondering what other members can tell me about discontinuing medications. I had to stop several of my medications that I couldn't afford to fill and am starting to feel quite ill, I'm having a hard time telling whether it is an effect of quitting the medications, or if it is a depressive episode starting. And another variable is that I did just stop chemotherapy 7 weeks ago and could be having some residual effects from that. I was on 40mg of Prozac, 400 of Lamictal, 300 of Wellbutrin, 600 of lithium and 4 mg of Risperdal. The Prozac and the lithium are the only 2 I can afford to keep taking, and I noticed when I ran out of Prozac for a couple of weeks, my ED went away so I am now taking the lithium only twice per day. Has anybody else experienced discontinuation symptoms from stopping these meds? If so, what did you do to minimize it and how long did it take to go away? I hope it goes away soon. I've been without the medications for about 6 weeks now. I'm functional but feel very flu like and I suppose depressed, though there are lots of depressing things going on right now so I probably should be somewhat depressed. Any advice appreciated -- thanks! |

I've never quit suddenly. I've always tapered.
I've been on various SSRIs over the years, but I stopped taking those after doing a little research. Many studies show that SSRIs don't fair any better than placebos in blind studies. Of course, there are people who swear they help them. Maybe you should call your pdoc if you need help tapering. Maybe the doctor has a few free samples or something they could give you while you quit. I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry to hear abut the chemotherapy, Catman. I'm glad that you're still able to at least be on the Lithium. I'd set up an appointment with your p-doc- I am not sure how the chemo would affect the amount of Lithium in your blood. If you're not able to pay for the appointment right now- maybe you can set-up a payment plan?
Maybe there's other generic forms of the meds you can take?
