I have been a binge eater for years

It was hard for me to put those words down in writing. So ashamed.

Every time I binge, I swear that I won't do it again...but I do,and do and do

Does anyone else do this? Do you see any relationship between this and BP?

Should I tell my P.doc?

All advice appreciated

Binge eating is very common among BPs. It's just another form of self-medication. Ironically, I was a binge eater for much of my life, but mood stabilizers took the urges away and now I just eat when I'm hungry. I just wish I'd discovered these drugs 150 lbs. ago!

I would definitely tell your pdoc about your bingeing. He can't help you unless you are completely honest with him. It's nothing to be ashamed of; lots of people do it, but unfortunately it raises our risk of heart disease and diabetes, which as mentally ill people we are more susceptible to anyway. Take care.

I also use to binge eat. With medication I've been able to handle my habits better.

I do at times eat sweets to get that feel better feeling, but I only eat a cookie or two and the satisfies me.

I would definitely talk to your Pdoc and see what they maybe able to do to assist you in getting this under control.

Talk to your Pdoc- they can only help you based on what you tell them. My binge eating was horrible when I wasn't medicated.

I absolutely hate that feeling that the only thing you can do to feel at ease is to eat.. and then when you do- you realize that didn't help at all- but it takes away the feeling temporarily. Then for me- the urge always seemed stronger than the previous one. Fortunately, being on my meds has helped reduce my urge greatly.

I've gone to Overeaters Anon Support groups- unfortunately- they didn't really help me, but I can tell you that overeating isn't specific to bipolar- some people will use it for anxiety or depression.

Best of luck to you- let us know what your p-doc says.

I totally am, but as long as I it basically the Atkins diet I can binge all I want! I've heard Topamax can help, but it didn't with me. It just made me stupid, they call it Dopamax...good luck!

Are you taking meds specific to the binge eating, or does one of your bp meds help?

I don't know if i am a binge eater, because i overeat the same amount every day. I've done this for 18 years [i am 47] since my life fell apart when i was 29 and i lost my partner and stopped working. I eat a lot of junk. I've tried Overeaters Anonymous, Weight-Watchers and TOPS [Take Off Pounds Sensibly].

I diet sometimes. In 2007/8 i dieted for over a year and lost 65 pounds. I've been on three diets this year and it's only August. This year, i dieted for two days twice and three weeks once, including losing 12 pounds in the first week!

I feel really out of control with eating but the misery that comes with each failed diet is too much to handle so i decided i will just try and tolerate it. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, gamble, hoard or ***** around so i just decided i will allow myself this weakness.

I am overweight and very unhappy about it but do not use a cane, walker, scooter or other mobility device. I can move around okay, just nothing real vigorous. I don't get the attention from men that i did when i was thin, but i don't want a partner so it's not a big deal.

If i could change my disordered eating, i would but having a flaw keeps me humble. I'm more puff than buff!
Thanks for this!

I binge eat. When I'm manic, when I'm depressed. Not so much when I'm just bopping about in 'normal'. I suppose we should tell our pdocs. Especially if it interferes with medicine taking. I don't know about you, but after a good binge I don't feel like taking meds at all. So |I probably should speak to my pdoc. Don't know if this helps you, but I hope it does. Thanks for posting!

I don 't really binge eat but I am crazy about sugar. I just can't get enough. I do eat portions that are too large. I have been heavy 26 years from psych meds.

Same here. My cravings start at night. My weaknesses are pop with candies.

Yep. New Pdoc asked if I'd ever been dxed with an eating disorder when we started talking about food and eating habits. I'll binge or I'll restrict food to the point of eating as little as possible which I know doesn't help the weight thing.

I have not told my P.doc so he does not know.

None of the bp meds seemed to have helped, but I guess the first thing to get it together would to admit it to my P.doc.

I just feel so ashamed.
I am glad to see I am not alone in this

That is how I feel. Very out of control, and that is a scary place to be

I started binge eating because I was restricting food to much while on meds that made me hungry. I told my pdoc about it and he put me on an appitite suppressant metformin (usually used for blood sugar stabilisation) and now that my hunger is controlled my binge eating has stopped.

I tend to binge eat when depressed, usually at night. I'll forget to eat all day, generally, then go crazy at night. Lately I've been trying to force myself to eat breakfast and I've found that helps diminish the urge later, but not very consistently. I know my unhealthy food routine is likely a contributing factor to my susceptibility to binge eat, but being depressed at the moment, I lack energy to do anything about it. I do try to remain somewhat in control by watching the calories, and keep my intake not too far away from what my recommended intake is to maintain weight, but again, not very consistently. I've noticed my binging alternates with some days only eating one meal with no appetite. I've also noticed times where even though I metacognitively knew I wasn't hungry and was just binging, I still could not resist. Makes me feel guilty afterwards, like I don't care about my health goals. I just find it difficult to maintain a food routine. Gotta keep trying...

I have a bad habit of restricting until I'm really hungry and then eating. Sometimes I feel like I don't have time to eat though. My worst habit is eating right before sleeping. I'm also lazy and don't like cooking for myself.

I am a sucker for pop and sweets. I'm trying to drink more tea, and water and less caffeine/soda.

I binge eat. Previously used psych med which controlled the eating but I am no longer on any meds. In younger years I was anorexic then went to purging and now I am at eating and eating. Has anyone tried any of the 12 step programs for eating?

ED's are very common with Bipolar .. I am in the middle yet another anorexia flare.

Your Pdoc and T really needs to know your struggling with this.
