Hi guys,

Question: Can illegal drugs like MDMA cause bipolar?

I usually get periods of being down and depressed, then normal. But the only side effect I've noticed since I've started taking drugs is that I get down, then super hyper. Like today I had so much energy I was shouting, joking and laughing and banging on the table, my mom was pissed because I was so hyper. This has been ongoing for the past 2 months. I still have periods of being normal though.

It reminds me of when I was a teenager when I was diagnosed with ADHD. I thought I grew out of the hyperactivity part though as it's been years (8+) since I've been hyper regularly.

Is hyperactivity the same as being manic? Does this sound like a manic episode?

I also haven't been sleeping well as my mind is racing (good and bad thoughts) and I'm really edgy.

I don't really mind the hyperness as I'm unemployed and it hasn't gotten me into any trouble but the lack of sleeping is really annoying. I'm not saying I have bipolar either as this has only been prevalent for about 2 months. But is it something I should be concerned about?

Thanks guys.

Sorry, it's the chemical name for Ecstasy. Can also be known as E or molly and another few I can't think of right now.

My sister has Been using mdma for years to hide her bipolar. Mdma though can cause seratonon sickness . It's a very crappy way to hide an illness. If you have the adhd label and get depression I'd go get evaluated. It's effecting your relations and that is enough of a reason to get help. Stop all drugs /drinking so a proper Diognosis can be given.

OK, sorry....I've never been personally involved with illegal substances so I didn't know.

Some of the things you mentioned sound like mania, but I am not a Dr so I cannot tell you how a drug could affect you in relation to bipolar mania. Are you diagnosed with bipolar? Has this happened before when you weren't taking a drug? Because I suppose its possible for a drug to cause these things that look like mania but it wouldn't be the same as having bipolar disorder I don't think.

I could be wrong or just not understanding your question. Sorry if that's so.
er,

In any case....please take care of yourself. Talk to a doctor about these things and see how things can get better!!

MDMA's effects are pretty similar to mania. I had the shifts from being down to super hyper before I'd ever tried MDMA and it's not a side effect I've ever heard of, however depression and anxiety are common side effects when on a "come down". Not being able to sleep is common as well, I usually can't sleep for around 3 days afterwards. They can last up to about a week generally so if you've taken it fairly recently it could explain some of it.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your replies.

I doubt I have bipolar but I'm just wondering where this mania is coming from. I've heard of drugs causing schizophrenia (no evidence but some suggestion) but never bipolar. I'm just curious if an amphetamine like MDMA could be causing this. I haven't taken it in over a week so it should be out of my system, yet still I'm like this.

I don't mind it too much, I just can't sleep which inevitably sends me crashing down.

It may be a good idea to see a doctor.

I like your second sentence here. I think you've answered the question yourself.

IMO only it would be hard to get some proper kind of diagnosis right now if you're still going through the aftermath of having taken E couse it could be contributing to your elevated mood.

Who am I to tell you to stop taking E for a while to see what happens to your mood and only after then, if you are still concerned about an elevated mood, get a proper evaluation done, because unfortunately we're all in control of our own actions and you would need to make that decision for yourself.

your chemicals in the head are out of balance prolonged use of that drug shuts down things in your head it is why u are exp this

if u have been a long term heavy user then u might be little boned in the end over time none use of stuff they can shrink / no longer work.......... X is something that messes with alot of different chemicals in the mind plus raising the body temp dangerously high (think roids and balls shrinking).......if u already have a imbalance going on and taken this it can get pretty bad

the only way to tell is now u have to completely detox and see if the chemicals balance back out ...........this should be done someplace safe do to the possible death cravings (life is pointless i feel numb all those death things)

how do i know this u are not the first person i seen this happen too .......all the heavy users i know from the day are n some med now to balance them out do to this........the ones that took it rarely are ok the ones that did it more then 4 days a month tho had a real hard time took awhile for them to lvl back out

if u are feeling like this odds u had a imbalance already but nothing u did not think was more then other ppl had but now it is really hitting u since your own brain/glands had the outside stuff intro to it

see a doctor they should be able to offer u something to allow u to do what u need too and get things done from there u will need to stay on them for life or try going off to see if own body has corrected

You guys are right. I'd say it's still in my system. I just found it odd because I haven't had these effects before from it so I'd say the highs are an afterglow of sorts and the anxiety and depression are increased by the come down, though I already have depression and anxiety I'd say it's adding to it.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate it!
