I am having a discussion with my GP and ex-H as to what constitutes irritability, the say when I am curt and snappy where as I consider myself irritable when I am trying to provoke a fight, argumentative and stabbing things with knives.

My Irritability is every noise has me ready to snap. I have no patience for "anything" .. I typically just stay away people if at all possible... My husband can say " I love you " and I want to yell ..

I find a book and just try to block out the world.

When everything annoys me, I yell a lot, I get constant thoughts of being wronged, want everyone to leave me alone.

I hate it.

I think both of your descriptions of irritability are accurate--curt & snappy AND wanting to provoke a fight--but the later is the one that's out of balance and needs attention. The curt and snappy can be corrected, usually, by going for a walk and getting centered; but reaching for a knife is something that needs treatment (meds, therapy). Curt and snappy might be a warning sign that you are headed toward the more serious irritability, but only you would know if there's a connection.

Irritability - when anything anyone says or does makes me want to get away from them. I feel that way today. Best to isolate yourself in those situations. I stay at home and watch crap TV on YouTube.

Thanks Lisketysplit, I am confused because I think I don't see the progression from curt and snappy to I want to put a hole in your face. I spent most of my teenage age years being curt and snappy and angry and i thought that was just how i am. I perhaps need to pay more attention to the early signs.

irritable to me is not wanting to be near anyone do anything talk to anyone or accept any kind of input it is not being angry or shut down, that is a higher level of avoidance. it is more like being numb and wanting to do something, but hating self and everything at same time. hard definition, but that is how i become.

Irritation, to me, is a side effect of the frustration/anger that is there for absolutely no reason. When i'm already frustrated, any small thing can irritate me like nails on a chalkboard.

Sometimes, i fear that i unconsciously choose to get irritated over nothing so i have an outlet for pent up rage/frustrations.

What makes the irritability really bad is that on the one hand you are full of this manic desire to DO something, to expend all these huge amounts of crazy, manic energy, but on the other hand, you can't concentrate on anything long enough to actually do anything. That really really exacerbates the irritability for me. If I could actually DO something constructive when I was manic, I wouldn't be half as irritable.

When I'm irritable it can feel physical like ground glass is coursing through my nerves. I feel like people around me are supreme idiots and have no patience for them.

Oh yes that too chaoticSymphony, I'll shout at my 9yr old too when irritable in the same sense to my previous comment about thinking people are just stupid.... It's a horrible thing to admit to Define irritability as they are young and still learning. I can completely relate to what you're saying.

Yeah, that's exactly the way it is. I do that at work - open my email, network files, DB projects, hiring files, etc, etc and try unsuccessfully to work on all of them while having 3 conversations at once. I also tend to do it physically - walking from room to room trying to do 6 things at once and forgetting all of them. I just want to switch my brain OFF. Petty the brain doesn't have a button like a computer where you can choose switch off, restart, sleep...

Yep! I was like that yesterday. Man, the people in my office were driving me crazy. Happily, I was a lot more patient today.

I was about to walk down an empty isle at CVS to get to the pharmacy in the back and some lady walked into the isle and a rolled my eyes at her in disgust and even thought how good it would feel to push her out of the isle and tell her to get the **** out of my isle.
I think I'm a little irritated.

Irritation for me is defo getting snappy at everyone, finding silly things annoying & looking for confrontation. I will go out of my way to take anything said to me, the wrong way. I am like that a lot. I am sure its a result of an unmet need, but f**k knows what it is !

OH MY!! I looked up irritability and found the list just too long to type for the most part, how ever there is a shorter list and I can not recall the two emotions (I think) that were listed. Evidently it must be very disturbing when people feel it from untold sources all at the same time. I had no idea it comes with a maze of emotions.
