When do you go inpatient for depression?

Last two weeks my depression is worsening, I would say severe.

My doctor has me on a new SNRI for the past 4 weeks, I'm afraid to stop taking it. She did say if things got worse to stop the new med. I'm also having trouble eating, sleeping, and getting to work. I don't see my pdoc until late next week. I'm not suicidal but the nurse at the doc office told me to go to an ER on Monday when I called because the docs are out for the holiday.

If I think I need inpatient, I go. No question. Suicidal ideations are no joke.

If you've never been before, it's good. Structure and meals and direct access to therapy. Usually there's a gym too. Got insurance?

I do have a high deductible group insurance plan. I called the inpatient center my pdoc works at. They said I could go in for an eval at any time. I don't know what to do?

Why don't you at least go in for the evaluation and see what they say?
Sometimes we aren't the best people to make decisions about what we need.

Check the website and it will tell you what to bring in your suitcase. Then go to their eval center. Good Luck!

I have been admitted because I started to have psychosis symptoms. Hallucinations, hearing people telling me to SU. Also i am suicidal and can no longer function normally - i cant get dressed, go places, do normal things.

Going IP is probably the smartest thing you can do right now. I had to do it in October and the experience was not bad at all. The most important reason to go is if you feel you are unsafe, and it sounds like you do. Please go for an eval at least, the worst they can do is tell you that you don't need to be hospitalized. Good luck to you, and hang in there.....it WILL get better.

The psych hospital couldn't verify insurance because of the holiday, and won't admit without 4k deposit. So an eval there wont do me any good if the option to admit me isnt there. So my only other option is local general er/psych unit with long wait time. They probably wouldn't send me upstairs because I'm not suicidal or showing psychosis.

My pdocs nurse couldn't reach her either. Looks like I'll be watching TV.

If and when your feeling suicidal, goto the e.r. They can't turn you away. Or call a crisis center. Most hospitals won't jump into it unless your a danger to yourself or others.

I tried to go last nite because my arms are cut up, but I was threatened with the police. So I said no. I'm still ripped about it.

Well shucks! Hang in there. When it's really bad hot baths w salts and phoning anyone who will just listen helps me. Do you have anyone supportive you can go stay with? I had a 5 day wait for a hospital trip once and I stayed w some friends.

Not sure. Some depressed folks get insomnia. Well keep posting and hang in there!

When I'm in a mixed state I'm totally irritated and everything bothers me, even the clothes I'm wearing. It's a dangerous state for bipolars because one has the energy then to commit suicide. At least in a totally depressed state I can't get out of bed to bother trying.

I'm considering leaving town and going stay with family until this passes. I don't know if that's a reasonable choice or not? I'm stopping the new AD med since she warned me to do so if things worsened.

If this all started after the new AD meds, I'd quit taking them too.

I dont go to hospital unless I am a danger to myself. Suicidal thoughts are almost normal for bp, its the plans you need to be aware of. Save the beds for those who really need it and take a holiday instead.
