I take risperdal for irritability and anger but it causes akathesia. My pdoc tried to get insurance to approve invega for me to try instead. They denied it because I haven't been on Seroquel or zyprexa. I tried Seroquel 7 yrs ago but it caused such evil anger and lots of weight gain! Zyprexa is known for weight gain.

I don't know what to do know. The beta blocker to fight akathesia isn't really working.

When I would get akathisia I would take, propononal, (spelled that wrong), congentin, lorazepam and benadryl. I quit quite a few meds bc of akathisia. But maybe Try adding on some benadryl or something....good luck.

I guess you will have to choose between Zyprexa or Seroquel. Fears of weight gain is not a good reason for insurance purposes. And a med taken years later may not have the unpleasant side effects that it did have the last time taken.

Idk, I understand the weight gain problem. I gained 50lbs on seroquel and now I'm on zyprexa and gaining weight, and I had just lost 20lbs. It all sucks! The activating aaps give me akathisia, the sedating ones weight gain...I hate bp!

But like I said maybe adding on benadryl will help.

I know why they denied and they have every right to. I was just hoping they wouldn't. Ap really helps with this irritability but I'm already overweight and super self conscious! I just feel stuck.

Well she gave me a fanapt sample and then I found out after I left the prescription for it has to be preauthorized too.

She wants me off the Risperdal because she says that its making my agitation/irritability and anxiety worse. I told her Ive been using coping skills as best I can and she can this anxiety is a whole different beast that coping skills alone wont get.

The first time I was on Zyprexa I gained 20 lbs. In the first month. This time I've gained 15 lbs in a year. So it doesn't always have to be a disaster. I'm not thrilled with the weight but I was obese to start with, so it doesn't make a big difference to me. YMMV.
