I'm looking for some people who maybe have done this? who gave you your best diagnosis ? therapist, psychiatrist, someone else? I'm not confident in my diagnosis (or my pdoc) and want to get my best chance at straightening my life out

Mine was a combination of my primary and psychiatrist. When I first started with a therapist and was in the hospital I was diagnosed with depression. The meds helped but I didn't truly start to get better until I started a mood stabilizer. I was in a major episode of depression but didn't know enough to know that I had hypomanic episodes in the past. It wasn't until I really opened up and started talking about my earliest memories of depression that we figured it out.

Mine was a psychiatrist. I've never had much luck with therapists, and an internist misdiagnosed me as depressed for two years - not his fault, it took him that long to talk me into seeing a psychiatrist.

I was diagnosed by my pcp then confirmed with a psychiatrist. But it seems like everytime I have an episode the new psychiatrist needs to be convinced too.

The sixth psychiatrist I went to gave me the Bipoar diagnosis. As I have PTSD it was missed for years. It wasn't until the PTSD was under control that it was obvious I havae Bipolar. My therapist did see it before my pdoc but wasn't officially qualified to diagnose.

My psychiatrist. But I know some psychologists can be excellent diagnosticians.

The third therapist I went to at the age of 27, even though I know my BP started at 15, and I had started going to therapy at 15. The first two psychologists should have there licenses revoked, but that's a long long story. The therapist that figured it out was listening to me talk about a recent incident where I was out of control irritable and he said " I think you might have bipolar?" He talked to my psychiatrist and he put me on Lamictal and then I realized when the medicine kicked in, "now everything makes sense."

If your not satisfied with your treatment go to another pdoc. I dealt with a horrible pdoc for the first seven years of my diagnosis (not the one that started me on lamictal, he left the practice just after I was diagnosed.) Just this last year in March I decided I was not happy living my life like I was, so I took a chance and went to a new pdoc. I wanted one that was younger and kept up on new discoveries in the psych world. This guy knows his **** and has been so patient with me, instead of my last pdoc saying "I don't know what I can do for you anymore." Take a chance and get another opinion, don't wait like I did.

My T is actually the one that pointed it out that I did not have MMD. That I did have BP I .. Him and My Pdoc are in the same practice. My next Pdoc appointment he had reviewed all my T's summary notes and whatnot. He agreed 100%. They have worked together for 18 years. So they have upmost respect for each other. So he gave me the actual diagnosis.

If your unhappy with your current provider by all mean seek a second opinion.

Hi palefraction

I've seen a few pdocs.

They are the ones who have always given me the same diagnosis, none of them refuting it.

But the first person to pick up on the possibility and refer me to a pdoc was my family doctor who noticed I was manic at an appointment.
