My pdoc wants to diagnose me as bipolar but is unsure if I am because I don't have an increase or decrease in libido during episodes. I've never felt sexual attraction for anyone, and identify as asexual. Does anyone else experience all the symptoms of bipolar except sex drive changes? She seems to think this is extremely unusual.

I don't always think that sex drive is such a big thing. It could be if it is Bipolar 1. Less so if it's Bipolar 2 where it's hypomania.

But sexuality is a complex thing and I know a lot of people who are Asexual and don't have Bipolar. I think sexuality and Bipolar, in that case, are unrelated. Basically, if you just never have/had a sex drive, I would find it very unlikely for it to randomly appear during episodes.

There's a lot of different factors for being Bipolar. Your pdoc should examine a lot of the other factors and not single out only one. Not every Bipolar person always has 100% of the same symptoms.

She just seemed so shocked that I was uninterested in sex maybe it's because I'm in university, a time where everyone's having sex with everyone haha

Bipolar manifests in different ways for everyone. You don't have to have all the symptoms to be bipolar. I'm sure there are others who don't experience hypersexuality.

I ID as asexual as well. I have no interest in sex and i dont find people sexually attractive. This is kind of odd considering im bipolar (and have bpd) but symptoms manifest differently in different ways. I have many alternatives to recklessness

I've never had a sex drive. I kind of think of myself as asexual, too. But I think I'm really a non-practicing heterosexual. Just never attracted to anyone sexually, but have had a few men in the past because I thought I should. It's been 20 years since. I get manic but the sex thing never manifests.

Yeah my recklessness usually manifests in booze consumption, spending money I don't have and suicide attempts, not sex.

I'm aro-ace and I most definitely have a sex drive, it's just not sexual attraction to people is the thing. I've never noticed any changes in my sex drive and it's never made me suddenly attracted sexually to other people. I'm diagnosed with bipolar with rapid cycling, probably NOS. I had a hell of a time getting through to my psychiatrist that I'm just not interested, it drove me nuts!

Geezus. I don't get these people at all (pdocs and other mh profs). For some people, the two are totally unrelated and it's ridiculous to use one as a way to define the other. Can you find a pdoc who was educated after the wheel was invented?

I have had many episodes where sex drive wasnt a big factor nor shopping
I have also had episodes where they definitely were a factor
I really dont think the sex drive thing is a defining bipolar trait LOL
It manifests in a million different ways!
