just wondering- how much are you affected by the deaths of celebrities?
i tend to be affected more by the death of a celebrity, than i do someone i know. perhaps because my family were never their for me, or perhaps because i find escape in the music/ movies anyone else |

Hi there !
Yes the worst ones for me were Lady Dianna and Freddy Murcury I felt that it was so sad the circumstances that took them away from us. I was probably already quite depressed at the time which just made me have a very heavy heart. I felt so emotionally cold when my mother passed away from cancer because she was always against me and never gave me any emotional support. We both didn't understand what was causing my unusual behaviour. I have forgiven her as it must be so hard for others to understand Bipolar disorder. Thanks for asking. fingers1 Last edited by fingers1; Feb 18, 2015 at 06:27 AM. |

Suicides do

When Robin Williams took his life, I cried for days. It was so sad that someone who brought such joy to others' lives could be in so much pain. I grew up watching his films (I think I've seen them all), and knowing he was no longer around just really effected me.

Usually celebrity deaths don't bother me. However, Robin Williams death did bother me some. I think it was because it hit a personal note sort to speak.

Robin Williams' suicide did affect me, although I don't usually get too upset about celebrity deaths. It's because I know that kind of pain and ive been in that dark place, and I felt a kinship with him. He was one of us.

I have done a lot of thinking on this subject over the years. From what I have been able to figure, the reason we are hit so hard by certain celebrity deaths, say the late, great Robin Williams, is because, even though we may not know them personally and may never meet them, we allow them into our lives on a nearly daily basis. It is almost as if they are a part of our family. They become such a part of our lives that when they are suddenly taken away from us, we grieve as though we have lost an actual family member. Whether or not we have friends or family to lean on in rough times, we always have TV, music, movies, books, etc. They make us feel better and oftentimes we find certain celebrities' work moves us more than others and this brings them closer to our hearts, and when they are suddenly ripped away from us, and that realization that we will never see or hear from the ever again sets in, it hurts. It can hurt a lot.

I was pretty affected when I heard Robin Williams and Nelson Mandela died.
I try just remember all of the wonderful things that they have done. It helps me, personally. I am not sure what strategies other people use. I relate to your question. Thank you for asking. |

Kurt Cobain is another big one for some people. I was too young then, but I am sad about him being gone. Hard to believe he's been gone 20 years! Also bipolar and suicide. Maybe that is what makes them particularly hard.

Wow I want to say no to your original question, but yes Robin Williams shocked the crap out of me. He seemed wonderful and happy. Like others his suicide was a huge shock.

I was devastated when Kurt Cobain died. I was only 17 and he was my hero. Back then I didn't know about his or my diagnosis but I knew he and I suffered deeply so I felt an affinity with him. His music greatly comforted me and brought me joy to so the thought of no more such music was very sad. I think about Kurt still most days. Oddly, I miss him and wish he were still around making great music and or other art and most of all enjoying his life and child. Makes it clear that suicide is never the answer.
