I am in the process of switching from depakote to lamictal (slowly) because of the massive side effects I was getting from the depakote (30 lb weight gain, lost half my hair, etc.). I was started on depakote while in the hospital going through a mixed state (and suicidal) so I'm a bit scared of the transition process because I just don't want to feel that way again. On the other hand, I also don't want to deal with depakote side effects forever either.
I am curious to hear from others who may have gone through this transition. I am very conscious of my moods from day to day, and now find myself getting concerned whenever I'm even the slightest bit irritable, for example. Any advice or personal experiences would really be helpful to me. Hugs to everyone! ![]()

Hi,
I've never even heard of this depatoke (spelling, haha), but I am currently on Lamictal, and my experience has been fairly good as far as mood goes. I was on Risperidone and Zoloft and those made me manic and psychotic, so the Lamictal I'm not actually sure I needed, they put me on the Lamictal because of all the things the other meds were causing. As soon as I got off the other meds (I went through a 3 month period of feeling like I had the flu ever single day because they stopped me off the meds cold turkey), I was TOTALLY human again. I don't know if the lamictal had anything to do with that or not. I do notice with lamictal though, for me, that I don't get angry. If I do get angry, it's only for a few seconds, then it goes away instantly and I can't even make myself angry. So I hope that helps for you. ^___^ |

I was on lamictal and it was good. Weight neutral, no real side effects but it didn't help with depression. Nothing really does but an antidepressant added into the mix.
