I have been on mood stabilizers since January, but it wasnt until 2 days ago that my doctor actually told me what hes 'treating me for.' he says i have a mood disorder. no other details...just that i have a mood disorder. what should i take from that? i mean, mood stabilizers DO work for me when nothing else has.

If you are concerned about the exact dx can you ask him? I am glad the mood stabalizers are working. That is the important thing. Take care.

he just said mood disorder when i asked. see, we were talking about how so bad i was feeling when i first started seeing him. hes uber proud of how hes helped me and he was like 'gosh. we did a great job finding something that works for you. i mean, theres only so many things to prescribe for what you've got. theres about 9 meds i could have given you. how many did we try before we found the winning combo? i would have never given up, but im glad we got it!" (he talks a lot) thats when i asked him, 'what exactly have i got?' then he said, mood disorder. you have a mood disorder.

He is definately commited to helping you but I find it frustrating that he has not even suggested bipolar as that is one of the major mood disorder.
what are you taking if you don't mind sharing?
I take lamictal, geodon and klonipin for sleep.
I am bipolar 1 run mostly manic side, bp2 runs more on the depressive side.
Do you have a therapist to help you cope?

How are you feeling on these meds?
He must be using seroquel as a mood stabilzer then.

that's how I felt after I started taking Seroquel... "happy". It was such a profound change, it was just amazing!

After about six or eight months I'm not so happy as I was, but not depressed most of the time. Seroquel has been approved for both bipolar depression and mania, so it is truly a mood stabilizer. (Most of the other anti-psychotics and anti-convulsants have been "approved" by the FDA, buy pdocs use 'em anyway).

Lots of doctors won't give a specific diagnosis... it can be a really "squishy" thing to get hold of, so they'll say stuff like "mood disorder". Look at it this way, you've basically got two mood disorders, depression and bipolar, and most bipolars are depressed most of the time. The same drugs are used to treat both, so they don't like to be pinned down. BP can be very hard to DX.

DJ

PS... I'm glad you're feeling better, Halliebeth. Take advantage of it!

Actually, there are quite a few mood disorders. I can think of 10+ specific ones at the moment. If you're young or new to your doc, s/he may not be able to tell exactly which one you have yet... (i.e. bipolar and normal depression look similar, but they can be quite different) And yes, the same drugs can treat both, but they have to be used differently. Depression meds can worsen bipolar disorder.

I wouldn't get too hung up about it. A dx is just a label anyway, and mood disorder may be the most accurate label s/he can provide at the moment.
