I was diagnosed Bi-polar 1 about five years ago. I have spent a total of about two years as either an inpatient or partial hospitalization patient. I have received a total of 9 Electro Shock Therapy due to depression because I wasn't responding to medication. Ect did help enormously at that time but at this point have been on Social Security Disability for about a year and a half and have since added to the diagnosis of Bi-polar 1 with associated audio psychosis, Anxiety, sleep disorder and ADD. I recently spent more time as an in patient and was being encouraged to under go more Ect.
The Hospital ordered my medical history, but I received it at home, everything, every last page from nurses observations to doctor notes. Obviously they do not release these records to patients, it was an accident. But I read it all, I couldn't help myself. When I went to see my new Family Doctor, I brought with me all my Lab results from over the years. She took more labs and when I went back a few weeks later, she wanted to start me on Delatersryl, Hormone replacement, I was hesitant, because I can barely keep up with the meds I was taking. About a month after, I found I was sleeping for six or more hours at a time, with out sleep meds and my awake dream like state was over. I also didn't feel so depressed. Most of the medication I take was stopped or reduced. My Psychiatrist really has not addressed the issue verbally. It's as now there are no answers. kinda of a wait and see! He has encouraged me to seek therapy since, I feel like they are preparing to tell me something that is going to need counseling. Am I Bi-polar? Have I been missed diagnosed. Is this what they are preparing me for, to tell me I have lost over five years of my life over an oversight? |

Welcome to Psych Central. Sorry to hear you have been suffering for a long time. But it sounds like you are feeling better. There are some people here that say they are plodding along for decades without feeling better. Maybe this is an improved diagnosis with improved treatment. You might ask to find out.
Getting sleep may be the single one thing that keeps me in balance. If you are not sleeping or having bad side affects, contact your doctor or psychiatrist and tell them what is happening so you can make adjustments. Many people find compassionate, caring people here at PC. Some people find the forums give them the compassion and empathy they seek. http://forums.psychcentral.com Please feel free to private message me by left clicking on the name in blue to the left of their post) for questions or just to share

Hey sweety, there is no way that we can DX you for we are not doctors or therapists. Yes, a misdiagnosis is not uncommon because MI is a spectrum of symptoms over an actual concrete illness. I feel that our mental professionals are trained to give their best guess. Maybe they are finally onto something. The most important part is that it's at least, finally getting worked out. Better luck to you!
