Hi all

So after going through a period of literal hell on Methylphenidate for over 2 years, I finally got to see someone who prescribed Dexamphetamine.

It's a LOT better than Methylphenidate for me (MASSIVE moodswings for me)

So for those struggling to get prescribed DEX, hang in there, it can happen

The last few days though, having been looking into Atypical depression and alike, Bipolar has come up, and I think I may suffer from it in addition to ADHD. Not sure yet whether Bipolar I or II, or possibly cyclothymia, i'm leaning towards one of the latter two though.

I'm going to be speaking to my pdoc this Friday about MAOIs, Mood stablisers and Bipolar.

So i'm just wondering of everyone elses experience on mood stablisers and stimulants, especially if you tried stimulants first and alone, before the combination, that would be a big help for me in understanding everything.

Thanks

This is a double post, wasn't sure which to put it in ADHD or Bipolar, so I did both.

I take lamictal, vyvanse, and abilify together and it's my best combo so far. I did ritalin and adderall first but I felt like they made me really aggitated. I was on lamictal before I started the ADHD meds. I love vyvanse - it doesn't have the bad side affects and it offsets the abilify making me sleepy/restlessness. Have you tried vyvanse? I'm not even positive its ADHD vs. hypomania.. how does one even know - when your doctor can't even tell you?

So you're able to be stable, focus and not be a zombie, and be your real self on the combo?

I have problems taking medications in general, even antibiotics (apparently it's a CPTSD thing) (guessing worry about dependence on, controlled by, etc).
Even said to my GF recently, i'm worried about asking new pdoc for antidepressants (and giving them a serious try). Afraid that they'll change me in some way that isn't myself, kinda thing.

It's reassuring though, that you have found a combo that works, thank you for sharing
Glad you found something

I've not tried Lisdexamfetamine no. Just MPH (IR and/or XR) and DEX (and street AMP in my late teens). My new pdoc did mention trying other non stimulant medications, after he prescribed DEX if it didn't work, can't remember which they were though.

ADHD vs hypomania, from what I heard earlier in a vid, they should try to stabilise mood first and then see if ADHD symptoms still present. I don't know how mood stablisees wouldn't stabilise mood dysregulation found in ADHD though as well? I'm a newbie in the realm of Bipolar information though, so I may not know what i'm on about, lol.

I do not have ADD/ADHD but my pdoc prescribed Vyvanse to pull me out of a deep depression. I am not sure if it is working or perhaps is in the process of working but it certainly gave me tons of much needed energy. I have considered it as a miracle drug for me. I love it and hope to not come off of it. I am not sure if that helps you but it is my experience. Good luck to you!

I was first diagnosed ADD and prescribed Adderall. I went on a very high, euphoric mania. I thought I had found my wonder drug! I thought I was finally happy because I had never felt this great before.

And then, of course, came the crash. I went into a mixed state, along with psychosis. It was hell.

My pdoc told me that having that type of reaction proves that along with ADD, I also have BP. So they started treating me for that. But I remained in a mixed state for three months and it also included a trip to the hospital.

Now I'm on Strattera, a non-stimulant. It works great.

I guess my advice is just be careful. Make sure you keep track of your moods and if you start to feel a little bit TOO great, be sure to talk to your pdoc.

But I have also seen a few people on here who are BP and ADD/ADHD and they do fine on stimulants. I guess we're all different.

Best of luck in finding the right one for you!
