So, I'm a 21 year old gay woman. I find the best things in life to be sex and alcohol. I also enjoy Hookah occasionally. I LOVE going to clubs too in order to dance, watch drag queens, and get drunk. Do you all think this is normal for my age or it might be a problem? I just try not to let Bipolar run my life so I drink anyway but it can end up not so great. I'm going to drink in a few days and party. I think there's nothing better than every I have mentioned!!!!

Well I'm a woman and straight and when I was 21 I'd have agreed wholeheartedly with you. Then the drinking got to be a problem plus I went on meds you aren't supposed to drink on so.....

Only difference is I started going to bars when I was 17 so it only took until I was about 23 or so to outgrow the drinking and partying.

My gauge was it wasn't a problem until it started interfering with work and causing me personal problems such as blacking out and not remembering where I left my car or where my clothes were or where I was what I had said to offend whom etc...

I think that it is part of being young. Just be careful because bipolars very often have problems with alcoholism or substance abuse.

Also, alcohol is a depressant.

If we told you not to do it, would you listen? It is your life.
Thanks for this!

I did that in my early twenties. I think everyone does. It just became a problem for me when I started abusing alcohol and got in a lot of trouble and ended up with a DUI. So, don't start to abuse, and you'll be fine. Have fun!

I was the same at your age. That is normal. Just try to keep in mind that you have to be careful since certain things in that lifestyle can trigger bad episodes. And also consider that mixing meds and alkohol/hooka is not a good thing. Sorry to sound like a total party-pooper, but that is what you are gonna get form us been-there-done-that sort of ladies...

My rule is that it's fine as long as it's not interfering with your life. Do you skip school, have trouble working, have difficulty focusing because of your partying and drinking? If things are ending up not so great when you drink, then you may be overdoing it. Drinking can be a kind of unhealthy self-medicating.

Hypersexual activity is a classic sign of mania, so that may be something to monitor. If you just have a high sex drive, you just have a high sex drive, but you should pay attention to changes to it as that's a signal something's wrong.

Basically, just look at your behavior and see if it's negatively impacting your life. If not, then just enjoy your early 20s and be safe.
