I have read a lot of descriptions on the Internet, but I still can't figure out if I'm Bipolar 1 or Bipolar 2. I've had plenty of extended manic and mixed episodes and done some really bizarre stuff. I've been paranoid recently, but, as far as I know, I've never experienced a true psychotic experience. My psychiatrist has never told me what he thinks, believe it or not, and I'm going to ask him at our next session. Before then, however, I'd like to form my own opinion of what I am.

With that in mind, if anyone would like to offer some ideas on the differences between BP1 and BP2, I'd love to hear them. Thanks very much.

P.S. If I had to guess, I would say that I am a BP2 with a stronger than average manic component, if such a thing exists.

P.P.S. I really love this forum.

Hello Woolly Bugger,

Yeah, I can totally relate - there are heaps of descritiptions on the internet on the differences between BP1 and BP2.

I was first diagnosed BP2 and then "upgraded" to BP1 in July 2014 (diagnosis changed to BP1 October 2014).

Mixed episodes are nasty aren't they! Yuck I hate them!

Now I might be wrong.

Doesn't a mixed episode only happen in BP1 or have I lost the plot? I have been known to lose the plot frequently So don't take too much of what I say to heart.

Hmmm funny how our psychiatrists don't always tell us what they think.

When I was getting a referral from my pdoc to my new T I saw on the referral form one of my dx was OCD and I was like "Huh"? Would have been nice if my pdoc could have told me that too!

P.S.: I love this forum too

Hello Hooligan. Thanks for responding. Yes, I've had many mixed episodes that were quite intense. One day, for example, I got out in the middle of the street in Boston and stopped a huge truck by standing in front of it. They were driving through an intersection with pedestrians in it, and this made me furious. I proceeded to berate the driver and insist that he get out of the truck and fight. I was out of control, but my position was the right one.

If you have had one manic episode your considered Bipolar I . It only takes one episode to fit the DSM for the I . I know a few people that have only had one Mania, there medications and lifestyle changes have kept them from having another, which is good ! Having anger outbursts are often part of Mania... Most all my Mania's include anger and non stop irritabilty. I don't get the Happy rainbow puppies.

Glad your liking PC !!! It's a great place to hang and be understood

I spent most of three years with a 'wastebasket' bipolar diagnosis (bipolar NOS, also known as "not otherwise specified"). Then I really flipped my cork and got upgraded to bipolar 1, oddly enough when I landed in the hospital with suicidal ideation/intent. It's all just different grades of illness and it's based on your history with mania---it only takes one episode of full-blown mania to earn the BP 1 label, even if you never have another.

Try not to get too hung up on labels. A good doctor treats patients according to their symptoms and not what is written on some bureaucrat's tally sheet. And the meds are pretty much the same no matter what "flavor" you have.

How would you best describe a "full-blown mania"?

For me, it's a severe elevation in mood accompanied by risky driving, major overspending and psychosis. I am also paranoid and easily enraged. The worst part is the persecution complex: "You're just trying to spoil my FUN!!" is what comes out whenever someone tries to tell me I'm manic and need to cool my jets.

I also hear music when there is none, or people talking over the radio or TV.

I feel a lot of energy and I get very irritable. It's hard to sleep.
Sometimes I become combative and hit people or break stuff.
I've also heard music in my head, and it gets louder and louder until I feel like I can't take it anymore. A few times I've had visual hallucinations.
