YES. I totally agree. It is the worst. My mom says this to me all the time even though she claims to be knowledgeable about my illness. People just do not get it. People just cannot understand what it feels like unless they have it themselves. I wish there was a better understanding of bipolar in the general public. People need to get out to art museums more. That's where you can see it.

People understand and can relate to normal depression. They just don't understand chronic and bipolar depression. They have no clue to the point that we are judged according to what they think.

It's so sad and frustrating.

I agree that someone who has not experienced clinical depression can not relate.

Best wishes, Gayle

elevatedsoul, I am in a similar place right now. I know if I went to the crisis center and was honest with them they would make me go IP. The intrusive thoughts are bad. I don't want to go to the hospital so I'm just seeing if I can ride it out. I just try to remind myself that I'll feel better at some point.

Same here! It's not ok! I have been to the crisis center way too many times in the past year but I end up being forced to go there. Hope you can work something out with your case manager.
Thanks for this!

things not to say to a person with mental illness.

everyone gets depressed,

get over it

all i'm saying

i think the expression " everyone gets depressed", is so overused.

people do need to wake up to the world around them and sseriously get to know about these things a little better

but they simply don't want to
Thanks for this!

Ditto! Not everyone is hauled to the depths of hell and most who are have a justification for it. We don't. There is no sameness at all.

I agree elevatedsoul, I have a hard time with my boyfriend when I share with him that I'm down, he takes it personally. He tells me that it's his goal in life to "make me happy", and as sweet as that is, knowing that he means well, I still have to face that he doesn't really get it. I hesitate now to share with him when I'm depressed.

im feeling a little scared, almost like i could cry (its been a while since i cried)
i thhink the medicines arent working anymore and my team doesnt seem to want to change my meds... i just wish they had what i am experiencing so they would know what im going through, but i guess thats not really a good thing to wish... im just desperate and frightened and i have to put on my play mask to be around other people so they dont go "whats wrong with you?" like i have something stamped on my forhead

It is true that everyone goes through depression. It's a matter of how you get out of it.
