I just found out I have been approved for SSI benefits. I applied for both SSI and SSDI, I'm not really sure why I've been awarded one and not the other. But oh well! This is great news! Now I will have a small amount of money for the things I need! I don't know how much it will be yet, I have an appointment next week. Yay!

Congrats ! Did you have enough work credits to qualify for SSDI? If not that is probably why you qualified for SSI.

It did not take very long at all compared to some other's stories I've heard. I applied at the social security office in February of this year and now will be receiving benefits in June. In the meantime I got DTA assistance. I didn't have to go to court and didn't even have to do a special appointment as I've heard others had to do. It has been five months since I applied to being approved. I'm really surprised cause I've heard so many stories of people going to court and having a really tough time, so I feel really lucky.

And I'm guessing I didn't have enough work credits for SSDI as I am only 26 and have had a spotty work history.

I hope that goes well! A friend of mine had to deal with some court stuff in order to get his, but he's had it for years now.

It's weird...I don't know why they approve some people and don't others. Makes no sense to me. We all need help.

Glad you didn't have to fight for it. I didn't either (I'm on SSDI) and am still puzzled that I got it so easily. You just never know. Anyway, congratulations! It sure makes life a lot easier when you have a little money coming in.

Thanks so much guys! For those who get it, would you mind sharing what you get per month? Is it enough to live on?

I get $1419/mo. That's only about a quarter of what I made monthly as a nurse but with my husband's SS of $678/month we scrape by. We're living with family so our expenses aren't bad---we only pay rent, phone, storage and car insurance, plus some food. I also have student loans but have negotiated that down to payments I can afford.

I looked it up and I think I read at first that it varies a bit by state but the amount is generally around $8,804.43 for an individual on SSI. If you get SSDI that amount varies depending on what you made during the quarters you worked. Mine comes out to somewhere just over 1/4th to less than 1/3rd of my old monthly salary. I think (it's hard to remember since the old salary had taxes deducted and the like and now all that is deducted is Medicare B and Medicare D.)
