I just finished an outpatient assessment at Menninger in Houston, TX And given a list of residential facility choices. However, when I looked up reviews they all had many negative reviews. I'm nervous about choosing the right facility. I know I need to go because I'm spiraling bad. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? I am bipolar I with borderline personality disorder and a few other issues. Any advice would greatly appreciated.

I would think that the reviews may be done more by people who were unhappy than those who left happy, just as a human nature thing. I also would imagine that the nature of the place may cause more negative reviews than if the reviews came from a different population. Not everyone is glad to get help.

Are you able to visit the places and see what they are like? I know that for nursing homes they recommend visiting at least twice, once to get the official tour and information and a 2nd time at mealtime to see what the food looks like and how patients are being handled. Maybe there is a way you can see for yourself?

If you can't visit how about calling them and asking questions about the things you want to know. Like what is their approach to BP and BPD, what a typical day is like and the staff ratio.

I have called and talked to them and their approach has been as if they are trying real hard to sell me a timeshare in the hamptons or something. A lot of these places are far from where I live (Mississippi) so getting a tour would be hard even though I would to tour the facilities before handing over thousands of dollars.

I'm getting really discouraged. Everywhere I have called do not provide all the services I need or are for more severe cases. It's almost as if I'm not "crazy" enough for these places but too "crazy" for less intensive treatment. I just want to give up. I haven't eaten or left my bed for the past two days.
