Lithium helped me during a really tough time but I'm off it now because I hated the side effects. It caused me to gain about 20 lbs It is however the "gold standard" for bipolar treatment and I imagine one day I will have to go back on it. It does a good job knocking down mania.
Thanks for this!

I just started 600 mg yesterday and today I feel much better. I had a terrible manic episode yesterday. I was going to be arrested, but luckily I asked for maybe a different route. I am home now. I was also given Thorazine, but it made me feel weird so I don't know if I even need it. Weight gain tbd. ✨

Yeah lithium didn't do much to stabilise my mood when I was on it once (I recall offhand being on it for a year and a half)
Thanks for this!

Yea Lamictal didn't work apparently. The doc said if this works, I can get off Lamictal. I was on it for months, though.

Was on 1800mg of Lithium, it didn't help, I never experienced any weight gain on it, the opposite actually because I was so sick from having toxic levels

Lamictal really only works on the depressive end of Bipolar, that is why you will find lots of people on both Lamictal and Lithium.

I was on Lithium for about 3 years. I dumped it for a variety of reasons.

I take Lithium and I personally think it really helps keep me stable. I have been on it for years.
All meds have side effects, you just have to decide which ones you want to deal with.
I did not gain any weight, but I did have a tremor and was thirsty all the time when I started. They went away in time.

My thyroid has been affected so I have to take thyroid meds.
I have my kidneys checked 2 times a year.
I have my lithium blood levels taken every 3 months unless I am changing the dose or have gotten into the toxicity range.
I have experienced toxicity a couple times, but I recognized the symptoms and called my pdoc (I was having major GI problems, both ends!)
I drink alot of water every day and make sure I don't get dehydrated. I also tend to use less salt.

I think Lithium gets a bad rap because most people don't understand it.
I think the anti-psychotics are worse as medications because some of them cause tremendous weight gain and metabolic disorders like diabetes.
All meds have side effects, just need to decide which ones you are willing to deal with..Good luck.

Lamictal didn't do too much for me either ... having said that, I know plenty of ppl who it did help, I am more the manic prone BP as opposed to depressive.
Thanks for this!
