BIPOLAR BASICS 101

State a random fact about BP and then bounce out to a new thread.

I would love for some rather ignorant people I know to know the basics about this disorder. Grrrr.

Did you know ??? Oh wow! Really!
Thanks for this!

While most people who suffer Bipolar have only have one manic/ depressed episode a year. Ultra- ultra rapid cycling individuals can experience a day to day shift between moods.

Bipolar used to be called "manic depression", and some people, myself included, prefer that term.

I prefer that term too.

How about, I don't hate you; I hate myself. You're just in the wrong place at the wrong time (agitated depression).

Trial & Error. Extreme fear of the episode happening again. Multiple meds to find the right regimen. Sometimes told you're unstable and need to be admitted while all you want is to be with your pets.

It can actually be exhausting.

Bipolar can take a while to diagnose. It took over 5 years for me to be officially diagnosed Bipolar II.

If I'm manic I've probably got too many ideas going on at once in my mind.

I'm not going to remember things like:

Where my car keys are
Where my mobile phone is
Where we keep the remote for the tv

Did you know ??? Oh wow! Really!

Meds are not a "cure". They help but, you can still cycle.

In addition to ^this^

Just because somebody has a history of or current substance abuse problem does not automatically make them a bad person. A lot of good people get caught up in bad things out of desperation to make the pain go away.

Several medications commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder can cause harm to vital organs, immediately and in the long term.

Yes, I do try to control my symptoms but no, I can't make them go away over night.
