I have said some of these things to my wife but this list raised points that I myself had not even thought of yet. My wife and I will gain a far better understanding of each other by reading this list, even though it just me with bipolar.

“I hate when I tell someone I have bipolar and they get a look of terror in their eyes.”
Lol. I like this one. I get this a lot. Like I'm going to grow claws and lunge at them or something. Hehe.

I used to just growl at people, even that freaked them out, at least until they got to know me and realized I was harmless.

Posted on my facebook page with the comment "For those who think "Bipolar" is an adjective or verb." I only see it as "f#&%^@ noun!

So how do we convince others that these are true?

You can't. Each individual has to see it for him or herself. Sad but true. So, keep on keepin' on.

I'm pretty sure most people could understand if they wanted to. There is only an entire mountain of information that anyone with access to the internet can find with some straightforward Google searches. The problem is that some people don't want to understand. They cling to ignorance like a comforting blankie.

“I’m a productive member of society. I’m not some crazy disease that needs to be locked away. I can do things just like everyone else. I’m strong and funny, and there isn’t anything more wrong with me than the next person.” — Alisha Roney
^This. Also, you gotta love when people look at you, can't believe you're bipolar, and say, "I think we are all just a little bipolar." Umm, no.

Thanks for posting this article. I shared it on social media (which is bold for me). I really appreciate literature that attempts to debunk the stigma of mental illness.

The huge stigma associated with bipolar, or any other mental disorder, is alive, and very healthy. I can not ever see the day coming when that will change. Because two couples avoided me after I revealed I was bipolar, I no longer tell anyone.
I searched Google - "How a person with bipolar thinks" and I found it very interesting. There are several text explaining, but the top one held the most interest for for. I believe any person without bipolar could read it, and still not understand much. I put it like this. Unless someone shoots them in the *** with an arrow, they can never understand what it is like. |

It took a while to stop being scared of normal happiness.

When the media keeps associating something negative with mental illness, the stigma will stay alive. Especially with these random acts of violence on innocent lives i.e. movie theater shootings : (
