I'm just curious as to which words/labels bother you?

I've never had an issue being called crazy, insane, mad etc as people have always used these to describe me long before I knew I had bipolar and always in an affectionate way. Neither do bipolar, manic or depressed bother me.

On the other hand mentally ill and psychotic still bother me.

I used to refer to myself as crazy quite often as did a few others, it never bothered me in the least.

Things that bother me are phrases like "A few bricks short of a load." or "He's not playing with a full deck.", there many more like this too.

Honestly, no labels or words bother me one bit. I've been called crazy, emotionless, monster, psycho.

I think my offended gland got dislodged yearrrrs ago, because things like this don't bug me.

You know what works on my nerves tho? When people, patients themselves refer to BP as a disease...

Idk why, it just irritates me I guess because its not like we have AIDS and shyt.

No words bother me. I call myself crazy. Lol. I wouldn't call someone else that though.

"Psycho" is the only one that really bothers me. Really, anything that makes one feel invalidated and abnormal is wrong but "psycho" especially gets under my skin. It seems so much more hostile than crazy, mentally ill, nuts, etc.

The specific words don't bother me that much, but the people who make jokes about mental illness bother me. Like they even understand how devastating mental illness can be. They take it lightly instead of taking it seriously. Especially if you've got a lot of functionality having bipolar, but you hide the symptoms well in order to fit in, people don't take you seriously when you really are feeling manic or depressed.

Because I changed my med, "are you going to go postal?" One more time from this person, strike three, and we are going to have a little chat and it won't be pretty.

I don't like 'psycho' or, depending on the person 'crazy.' What really bothers me, though, is when I have a valid human emotion, and I get asked if I've taken my meds. That's what I hate. Also, when people don't realize mental illness is not far off from physical illness. You wouldn't look all googly eyed at someone with kidney disease!

I hate being called "mentally ill". I'm not sick all the time, just every now and then.

The only label that bothers me is "Freak."

I think it was due to an over active imagination as a child were when people called me a freak I imagined myself as hideously deformed inside like the men displayed in old carnival freak shows. I couldn't see it and yet everyone else somehow could.

controled

i don't like it when people say...you're controled by the voices in your head, or demons control you- that's why you act like you do

i also don't like the term worthless- as in, " you're bipolar, you're wrothless to society".

and the same goes for brain dead. yeah okay, my memory sucks... but that's going a little far

and i agree with what was said above about terms such as you're notp laying with a full deck.

i don't like " the elevator doesn't go all the way up"

crazy annoys me too. makes me feel worthless, and it's not really a good word.

i refer to myself usually as mentally ill, mentally unstable, unwell, or not all their (which surprisingly never bothered me)

Crazy. That shows ignorance to mental illness imo. I say I don't feel well or I feel ill. My fiancé will ask mentally or physically? I can deal with that. If I over hear ignorance or see ignorance on tv with regards to mental illness I usually want to blow a gasket. Or politely correct them with a punch in the face. All of this of course is going on in my head on the outside I look quite well! I would never punch someone in the face. I might steam inside for hours having a conversation with them in my head but I'm not confrontational.

There isn't really anything like that that bothers me... I just don't normally get offended by name calling, no matter what it is. The only thing that really got to me was when I was younger going through depressive phases and people would tell me to "get over it" and "it isn't that bad, you have nothing to be sad about". Things like that just show lack of care and ignorance, in my opinion.
