My pdoc did research on this and was really excited about it and I know my hospital is all set up to do it but hasn't been able to because of lack of insurance coverage. However another hospital in the area is doing it now. I'd love to try but probably can't because it is a daily visit 90 minutes from home. So probably this isn't an option for me at all but I'm just curious if anyone has done it and what the results were.

What is it?

It is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Kind of a gentler ECT. It uses sound wave to stimulate part of the brain and with a bunch of daily treatments it is I think 33% effective in treatment resistant patients. No anesthesia or real side effects other than maybe some nausea or fatigue. Pretty much you just sit in a chair with a headphone like thing on and wait I think 30 minutes and you're done. It sounds easy. Except that it will never, ever be local here. I wish it weren't daily or I'd be begging for a referral to that hospital for that.

Could you get admitted IP in order to access it? It sounds like a good option to try... especially with no side effects.

I don't know. I have to ask about that too. I doubt it because I don't think they could justify the stay to Medicare. It sounds like it is strictly OP. I'm not sure the place that does it even does IP; I think their IP is elsewhere. I'm not that familiar with the place although my hospital is merging with it gradually and it will eventually become part of my hospital's system. Which may get my hospital to start using their rTMS but they are even farther away so that's not helpful.
It's just another thing on my list for my next appointment. I hope she's ready for questions.....I have about 50 of them.
