Has anyone else experienced significant hair loss due to their meds and/or thyroid issues? My hair has been falling out rapidly for the past month or so and I'm not sure what is causing it. I have let my pdoc know this repeatedly but she has not responded to my concern yet. If I were not having a difficult time right now I would probably quit my meds altogether.

If you'e had this problem, what did you do to fix it? Any input is greatly appreciated!

my hair isnt what it used to be. its much thinner and have a tiny bald spot in the back. I believe depakote made my hair fall out, and am now off it, but my hair hasnt grown back. I believe lamictal might be causing some hair loss as well, but I wont know. i know it sucks I used to have great hair and always kept it long.

theres propecia, and I tried at but was too scared of the side effetcs so I stopped it. I dont know if women can take it. good shamppo, I heard zinc helps. stay away from stress. I also think the sun helps your hair, my hair always looks better in the summer, I dont know why.

Have you tried biotin? I've heard good things about that.

Yes CopperStar I am taking biotin pills and also using biotin shampoo, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Thank you though.

My therapist recommended I see an endocrinologist if the problem doesn't get cleared up quickly. I'm worried pretty soon my hair loss will be noticeable and that terrifies me as my hair is pretty much my one beauty.

If you dig deep enough you will find that hair loss is a side effect of a great many medications.

I have thinning hair and huge bald spot but because I am on so many meds it impossible to determine what one med is causing it. Plus don't forget interactions between meds which might also cause hair loss.

Have you have bloodwork done, lunaticfringe? My grown daughter (who has extremely thick, lush hair) was losing her hair. Doctor did bloodwork & found out that my daughter had a severe vitamin D deficiency. Doc put her on a prescription amount of vit D, told her to sit in the sun for 10 mins every day (she had always avoided the sun) & within 3 weeks my daughter's hair wasn't falling out anymore. So weird, but entirely true.
Thanks for this!

Depakote made my hair fall out like crazy. I'm on lamictal now and don't have any problems. I miss my thick hair.

Me too. I am on lamictal and lexapro. I am taking vitamins and biotin and using the shampoos, etc.
I just cut it shorter and got some layers.

It sucks

Depakote did it to me, too.. hair has never been the same since. Falls out like crazy. I wish I had known that it was a possible side effect, because I really liked my hair the way it was, long and healthy; no more. I've seen 3 dermatologists about it and tried umpteen topical solutions but so far haven't found anything to work for me. My current neurologist (I get severe migraines) told me he never recommends it to women as a first line option because he's never known one to be okay with the frequent hair loss. If only I had met him sooner.

Bloodwork would definitely be a good idea; I've also read that iron deficiency can be a factor in rapid hair loss, but you don't want to guess about that as ending up with too much iron in your diet would not be good.

Also, this is purely antecdotal, but once I started drinking soy milk every day my hair and nails grew like crazy. I'm going to start drinking more so hopefully the hair I lost will come back. Of course it will be like a million different lengths but oh well.
