Seroquel is barely cutting it anymore at 100mgs but if I go up to the therapeutic level, I'll have the kicks alL night. And BTW, I have insomnia bad. So what meds have worked for you as a night/PRN med? And yes I've tried benzos. Barely touch me. I have a very high tolerance too

Saphris really knocked me out when I took it, more than the Seroquel ever did. That being said, I had to quit taking Saphris because I was having difficulty getting up in the morning.

Can you give a list of the medications you have tried. I could list a ton of options but you might get better advice if we know what you have tried.

I deal with Insomnia, its horrible.

What bipolar doesn't? I'm not being rude but I see a common trend on here. I thought it was just me before I came to PC. I seriously need a horse tranquilizer. Give a list like Christina suggested.

Did I say something wrong in here?

Anyway, I've tried seroquel, trazadone, ambien, remeron. Seroquel is the one I've been on the longest.

Seroquel XR "typically" helps more for sleep than straight Seroquel.

Saphris offers many people relief in Insomnia. I got very tired about 20 m ins after I took it, but it caused me to wheeze so I only took that 1 dose.

Abilify ...Some people say it helps them sleep

Ambien, Lunesta and the like are really all the same , Hyponotic's and they either work well or not at all.

I have been averaging less than 20 hours of sleep a week for 4-5 months. Push came to shove and I agreed to take Doxepin its a old school tricyclic antidepressant..Started it Friday night and I have sleep anywhere from 11-13 hours of deep restful sleep a night,,, Its been amazing , But I know there is a good chance that its could flip me right into a hellish Mania. So I have my eyes wide open, If I get a hint of psychosis I will drop it asap . Keep in mind I am currently on no Psych meds. So that might make a difference.

What are you doing in other ways to increase your ability to get sleep? Whats your sleep hygiene like?

No laptops, cellphones, tablets or TV at least an hour before bed time.
Are you eating a healthy diet? Can you cut out all processed food? thats helpful
Do you get enough exercise daily?
Do you journal?
Even if you can't sleep do you make yourself lay in bed for at least 6 hours a night?
Do you keep your room cool and dark?
Warm soothing showers or baths before can be helpful to wind down.
Hot tea can also be soothing.
Meditation
Mindfulness
Yoga
Essential oils , Lavendar is a great one.
Never ever Nap

Personally I have found that when I go to bed I just tell myself " Okay I might sleep or I might not. If I do YAY if I dont thats okay too " I will lay there and day dream.. Often just taking away the stress of " Will I sleep or wont I " outta the mix.. Sleep can come.

You cant force yourself to sleep .. All you can really do is follow a schedule go to bed at X get up at X whether you sleep or not, Incorporate all the sleep hygiene tools you can to give yourself the best chance of getting that elusive creature sleep to visit you on somewhat regular schedule.

I hope you find something that will help. Insomnia is just one of the lovely shytti parts of Bipolar everyone deals with. it sucks

Thank you for your lists of suggestions. I actually have been meditating with my headphones on with soothing sounds. That helps a lot

No of course you said nothing wrong. Before I came to PC I thought my sleep problem was insomnia. When I came to PC I noticed that so many have that unfortunate problem. I then realized it was very common with people who suffer from bipolar. I actually came off Seroquel several months ago and was for months trying several meds with my pdoc to get some sleep because Seroquel was my hero for sleep. I've tried everything you listed. After Seroquel he put me on Trazadone, Clonidine, and Hydroxizine, kinda worked, not too much. Had to go on Geodon for psychosis and I seem to be sleeping better, but I'm still titrating. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, it came out wrong.

Mirtazapine at very low dosage worked well for me. I don't remember how much mg's i used to take. 1/4 of pill knocked me out and gave very good quality of sleep. Negative side was very tired and exhausted feeling whole next day but it'll fade off in about a week or so.

Nowadays i take 50 mg seroquel prolong because it works for me and has some anxiety relieving effects too, unlike mirtazapine. (And because i just happen to have it in stock from days i was on larger dosage)

Thanx black sheep. I bit the bullet and went back to my seroquel last night. Slept like a rock but now I feel hungover. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to sleep without it!

I would consult your pdoc and maybe up you mgs. I have insomnia, and it usually takes 250 mgs to get to sleep. Still, I have nightmares sometimes and wake up sweating and confused.
