Of course everyone has mood swings.
But ours swing so violently that they interrupt our day to day lives, loved ones and basic functioning. That's why its disordered. Besides, BP is so much more than mood swings, that's just the most obvious symptom.

Actually no, most people do not have mood swings. Most people experience emotions and physiological effects as a direct response to their present situation, and then recuperate fairly quickly.
People with mood disorders experience emotions and physiological effects that are randomly manifested regardless of the situation, and may also be launched into severe mood episodes by outside stimuli, as well. Then these emotions and physiological effects may last weeks or even months, compared to a neurotypical who will recover within minutes, hours or days depending on the severity of a situation. |

If you feel you only have simple "mood swings"
Perhaps you were misdianosed. Speak with your doctor about concerns

I keep a diary of mood - I don't think I am bipolar as such, but when my mood swings fast or to inappropriate extremes I know something is up and look for causes.

Yes i believe everyone has mood swings. I am not bipolar yet i do have my moments. I find it i get hungry, angry, lonely or tired i get aggitated which provokes outbursts of mood swings. If i don't feel well physically or am over worked i also go into a dark mood. As long as we have human bodies with hormones, we all have mood swings. tc

There's no doubt everyone has mood swings. It's just that with bipolar the mood swings are usually more severe, and often not caused by the environment or life events. These mood swings affect your quality of life. So I guess the main thing to ask yourself is whether your mood swings affect your quality of life.

My type of "swings" are enough to put myself in a dark room for days and scared if I talk to anyone then my head will spin exorcist style. Meaning, I get very ugly.

Normal mood swings don't end up putting people in the hospital.

I think it is the timing and severity that separates it from the "norm". Perhaps we can identify BP mood swings as "unpredictable" by definition.

Everyone does have mood swings, but they are usually much less severe than in bipolar. Most peoples' mood swings are a direct response from changes in the environment. An argument with a friend, a rough week at school or work, and so on. Bipolar is non-environmentally affected - environmental changes can only amplify what is already there. And that is why it's incredibly hard for me to answer the dreaded "what happened?" question, when I'm depressed.

I often wonder how many disorders are legit. Apparently nail biting is now considered a mental disorder or OCD or something. Anything to shove pills down peoples throats and have us line the pockets of pharmaceutical companies.

I'm basically bipolar stabile but I do experience normal mood swings. I just don't know if that's because of the others moods bleeding through or if it's normal for everyone else? A new thread!
