I was hired to work at a pretty popular shop a few month ago. Now I'm running the place. I have a key and everything.

Last night, I closed by myself for the first time. Well, I noticed that the register was over by around $136. Naturally, I was perplexed and let the owner know. She was confused, too, and decided to deal with it on Monday morning.

I went over to the Walmart to buy some chalk and realized that my wallet was empty.

First thought: "Somebody went to the back of the store, opened my wallet, and stole $138 from me!"
Second thought: "Oh, my God. I bought a $2 coffee at work! Then I put the rest of my money right into the register!" Occam's razor.

So I called my boss and let her know. She said it was okay, but she doesn't understand how I managed to do it. Me neither.

Even though she said she'd deal with it, I'm still freaked out. I feel terrible for screwing it up and can't help but feel that she doesn't believe the money really is mine. That's irrational, but I've been feeling super anxious about it all morning.

That would be very disconcerting!! I'd have the very same reaction, and am all-too-familiar with losings/ findings that are "inexplicable". They are so unsettling, so I hope it all gets sorted out soon for you! (I agree with the others in that it should be fine, so try to relax. Easier said than done, but still.)

Good to see you again, btw! It's been awhile. Beside this, have things been going well for you?

Since you figured out why the register was over, I hope your boss will look at it as no harm, no foul. Everybody screws up at work. But your boss obviously has faith in you, or you wouldn't be running the place. Try not to obsess about this or overthink it. You'll be ok.

Pretty good! My moods have been normal, but I managed to get myself a nice OCD diagnosis. Once the Bipolar was dealt with, it was kind of clear that I have some moderate issues with compulsive checking. This latest mishap isn't doing much to help.
