Please share your experiences either way.

I am on SSI due to my mental illnesses. I received the positive Social Security determination and at that same time as appointed a Representative Payee due to the impulsiveness that can accompany the illness.

I am attempting to become my own Representative Payee but have anxieties that Social Security will want to end my benefits because I think I can handle my own money. That fear is from my own imagination for the most part.

What is your experience?

I handle my own. When I was approved they did an assessment to see if I was ok doing it because my therapist and I had both noted that I had had trouble paying bills on time in the past. Since that time though I'd gotten set up with a system that works and they were satisfied with that.

I just got my renewal and they didn't care at all that I manage my own money. I did document that I occasionally have help figuring out bills or budgeting because I do, but for the most part I'm independent with finances.

Thank you so much. I know I will still need help. In a way, I don't want the responsibility. But paying a company $600 a year and they don't contact me when bills are high (2 months of a water leak cost an additional $200) and letting house insurance lapse because they didn't anticipate paying me less personal needs. I need someone who cares and who better then me? But my impulse problem is still a problem. Well, thank you again! This whole change causes too many emotions to sort and leaves my mind a fog.

You don't have a family member or close friend as a rep payee?

It is a company that is over 100 miles away. If I get turned down, I will try to have my husband become mine.

I do not have a rep payee on SSD. My sister does, but in her case it goes right to the convalescent center where she lives.

No one ever required me to make that choice.
Thanks for this!

I don't have a rep, but my husband handles the finances anyway. It keeps my anxiety down.
Thanks for this!

Thank you all. I guess my applying to be my own possibly didn't open up a huge abyss of problems.
