I almost never drink but it's New Year's and we were given alcohol for free from some of my boyfriend's co-workers. I was wondering if it'd be safe to drink a little bit while on my meds, or should I avoid it altogether?

I think that it depends on the type of meds your on. You shouldn't drink if you're on benzos, and most mood stabilizers and antidepressants have warnings about drinking alcohol while taking them. Also people say that booze can exacerbate manic symptoms, but I'm an alcoholic so drinking is just kind of par for the course for me.

It it is like wine which is 8% alcohol about 2 glasses to 3 should be fine. If it is hard liquor, absolutely not. It is dangerous. You can pass on it and drink a soda, or a non alcoholic beer. Is it really worth it to play russian rolette with your health and meds for the sake of being socially accepted on new years eve? i dont think so. besides if you get sick no one will back you up, they will say it was your own fault. caution is wise and good. tc

I'm opting for wine...a glass or two. I've had a Long Island ice tea before and I was fine. I only had one and that was it. I didn't take my meds that night instead I took them the next morning (they don't make me sleepy). I take one AD, mood stabilizers and a AP. I would stay away from liquor as stated above and maybe stick with light wine. If u decide on wine just ask the sales clerk the alcohol percent of the particular wine your interested in.

I'm an alcoholic but when I was drinking it depended on the meds as to the affect. Benzo's no! AD, no biggie usually. Mood stabilizer...hmmm, I don't know. Be careful!

I thought as much. All we have is vodka, and yes I totally agree that it's not worth messing myself up just for one night, especially since I just got back to feeling good for the past 2 days. I was just wondering, since I know some people who can drink on their meds and be alright.

I'm on mood stabilizers. My boyfriend says I've been acting hypomanic and I wasn't really that aware of it myself so I guess it's even better of an idea to just avoid alcohol.

I had asked my pdoc if it was ok to drink an occasional glass of wine and was told NO. Occasional meaning once a month or two or three months apart. My new pdoc explained that it affects how your meds are metabolized.

Apparently I posted something off the walks that, when I read to my hubs, was off the walls. So, I just want to post that drinking while on meds is a poor thing to do. I almost never drink but tonight is the exception. I hope to see you all in the morning. Love you all!

I drink with my meds. Probably shouldn't but oh well. I don't drink very often. I just don't take my medicine when I drink, except the Invega since that's an injection. But yeah that's probably a poor decision on my part.

I also drink on my meds and I know its a poor decision as it means I miss my evening meds depending on how much I drink. I can always tell and always regret it

I drink occasionally, don't see the problem if it's not often and it's not a large amount. I don't skip my meds if I'm going to drink either, I take them as I usually would
