For those of you on disability in US-how hard is filing taxes? I've never done it. Do people get a refund or something? I pay for Medicare.

I posted this in another forum but no one has answered there.

With SSDI you really shouldn't need to file. If you do have some situation that requires filing it's not hard. You can do it yourself using Turbotax (the most basic is free and will tell you if you need to file at all or if you need a different version that will cost you about $30-$50) or pay a professional. I always did my own.

I can't remember the rules with SSDI but I think you have to be making a somewhat significant amount over your benefit to have to file at all.

I've only had to file once since I got SSDI and that was because I had my student loans discharged which they consider being paid so I had to file and then prove that I really did not owe them a lot of money over the whole thing.

The first $18,000 is none taxible, so unless you make more you don't have to file.

They send it to everyone.

You scared me with the $18000 thing; I'm a bit over that and would hate to owe back taxes so I looked it up. Turns out it's pretty complicated. Your SSDI itself really isn't taxable but if you earn more than an amount beyond that which brings you to a "base value" set each year then you have to pay taxes.

This explains why last year I tried desperately to file to explain a small amount I earned online and couldn't get the programs to accept that it was taxable, take my money! It wasn't really taxable...oh.
