Anyone ever hallucinated a smell? It's been happening to me for a couple of weeks. I keep smelling fire. It's been happening at night when I'm sleeping so maybe it's dreaming? But i didn't know you could smell things in your dreams. Last night I bolted out of bed at one am and ran panicked out of my room because the smell of fire was so strong. I thought the house was on fire. But once I left my room I didn't smell it anymore and nothing was amiss so I went back to bed. Took me awhile to fall back asleep because it was so real.
I would say it's my husband visiting me but that would be cigarette smoke, not fire. Just curious if anyone else has ever had this.

Huh, that's really interesting. That's never happened to me before. I've had my fair share of auditory hallucinations but I've never had any olfactory hallucinations.

Do you get migraines? Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure I read that though it's not common people can get olfactory hallucinations with migraines, and the most common smell is the smell of something hot or burning. Then again it could be something people often smell with olfactory hallucinations in general, too.
Also, the one time I went through a psychotic spell I had a lot of olfactory hallucinations. Then ever since, occasionally I'll get them, at seemingly random times even when I'm doing well mentally. It's this extremely odd smell that I can't even explain. |

I smell impossible things all the time, my fathers aftershave, oil, gas, horse ****, various food, sulfur...etc
I keep meaning to ask my dr about it. I googled it once and I read it's common in epilepsy. I had nocturnal tonic-clinic seizures after one of my attempts for about 10 years so I wonder if it's left over from that?

I've had olfactory hallucinations… usually I just have to ask someone around me if they can smell the same thing I'm smelling and if they can't I know it's a hallucination. Typically mine are the same recurring smells, though I've not smelled smoke or fire before.

Olfactory hallucinations, yes. Mine started 20 years ago. They don't last terribly long, and fortunately they're not frequent, because they've always been the exact same smell: rotten chicken(!) Yuck. There's no chicken, rhyme or reason to it. Definitely hallucinations. Yet so realistic.
Interesting timing, your question, because just this week I've been smelling gasoline. Multiple times a day. BF can't smell it. There's no gas. Today I had an idea, and am testing it, hoping for an alternative explanation. Each time they've happened awaking you from sleep? I've awoken from the chicken smell, but it also happens at all different kinds of times. |
