I find that regular/general docs treat those with MI very badly. I have a few examples.
I work for a cardiologist. I'm his assistant and see every patient with him. We have a computer in front of us where we can see there med list and list of other health problems. This one patient had bipolar, anxiety, depression listed along with a long list of psych meds. This pt was truly Ill and needed a heart cath procedure but the dr told him to go and get a second opinion instead of booking him. I was surprised. The dr never does this. The patient left the room and the dr said "let someone else deal with him. People with those kind of problems are the ones that sew you." I felt horrible for the patient. And about a wk ago a girl who was in all kinds of anxiety meds came in and all her tests were dangerously abnormal. She needed care ASAP. He sent her to the ER and called a different dr to treat her. And then said "that's a problem patient, on all kinds of meds". She was a sweet girl and I felt horrible for her. Then the other day I went to urgent care because I felt funny. I was extremely cold and fatigued and wondered if it was my blood pressure because sometimes it gets dangerously low. Because I didn't want to get crapped on, I only named ativan as my med. But I think it still said BP in my chart from a previous visit. Now first off yes I do admit, I've said on this forum how I do have a history of abuse with my prescriptions sometimes but during this time I was days off of anything and sober. Anyways this dr was looking with his light into my eyes and asking me if I was on drugs. I felt like I was being interrogated. He said "well you take ativan so maybe that's why you're so fatigued". I said "I take them as needed and haven't needed them in days" which was the truth. He said "it's not possible you've abused any other drugs today?" I said "no" which was the truth. Then I said "look, I work long hours and it's hard for me to get through my days, I just want something for energy but nothing addictive". He said "are you asking for pain meds or stimulants that get you high?" I almost laughed. Wait I think I did laugh. Anyway I ended up having a ear infection and UTI I didn't know about. I didn't even want the antibiotics. I went home. Another time I had to get blood work done at my Gyno to see why i wasn't having periods. I ended up having post pill amenorrhea from being on the pill for so long. But they had a complete list of all my meds and the dr said "now we'll see how bad all these psych meds screwed you up" in front of the workers and other patients and not in the room. Big no no. My blood work was fine. This isn't the first time a dr has treated me like this, or refused to treat me because I was on psych meds. And I'm sure I'm not the only patient either. Now I'm not saying ALL docs are like this. I've had some very kind ones that actually did take me seriously and treated me well even with my messy history. Yeah I work in a medical practice and have heard comments be made by our staff on occassion. When I hear it, I've been known to stick up for our patients. I'd be quick to call my own doctors out on it too if I ever suspected they were treating me different because of my diagnoses.

Yeh I worked in ED, some of the Drs are gigantic liabilities, it's scary. They also dread psych patients from my experience. So it's great fun being a closet bipolar when your in the tearoom & they're going on about some crazy psych patient like they're an animal.

The drs I've worked for see a list of psych meds and talk crap yet they hand out norco and Xanax scripts like candy! My boss has gotten a letter noting that he should only be dealing in cardiac meds, not pain meds but doesn't care. I could go on with stories for days about his HIPPA violations.

I hate it when I go to a new doctor and get the third degree about my psychiatric history before we ever talk about what I came in for.

![]() I like my current Dr. But in the past 16 years I saw 1 for about 8 years. Every time I saw him I hated his frightened eyes. As if I was some crazy kook he had to make happy - then get out. Poor guy. Then this chick who had fantasies about only taking care of rich tennis elbows - she didn't seem to care about me. Then this other chick who I only saw once, she berated me so badly for changing Drs she made me cry and have a panic attack. 2 years passed, my shrink gave me my new Dr.'s name. She said, "he is great with people like... well, people who have special needs". lol, whatever - I am now dealing with a General Practitioner who is also fascinated by the brain. I hope I don't freak him out by being too weird.

My psych center use to have a walk in clinic they were great. My new Dr is great even though she goes through my symptoms and meds every time. She looks up what interacts before prescribing. She even dx'd EDNOS to get me into a nutritionist before the holidays because she didn't want me to stress out and have a relapse. There's one hospital that I'll go to here. They're so nice and caring I do ip there too. Now every gyno I see has been a ****. I refuse to go anymore.

As someone who suffers with other chronic illnesses, this has largely been a common experience for me, especially with pain clinics (chronic pain sufferer here) apparently no matter what I'm always a drug seeking addict. The ER docs are the worst, especially the psych ones. For some reason they see me for five minutes and determine I have borderline personality disorder. I don't know how they come to that conclusion after only five minutes but it happens every time. Apparently mentioning any kind of abuse automatically put you in Axis II personality disorders lol.

This happened to me once, now that I think about it. I wasn't feeling well and didn't have a regular GP at the time. I decided to go to my mom and grandmother's GP since they both seemed to love her. Once she went over my psych meds, she was dismissive. I was in there for like five minutes before she left. I sat in that room and cried. I couldn't believe it.
