I have been dealing with some extreme mixed state symptoms for about 2 months now... and feel completely hopeless. I have had psychotic symptoms, suicidal thoughts, rapid thoughts and speech, difficulty concentrating on anything (which is stressing me out because I'm in college), and extreme irritability. I was recently started on lithium in addition to everything else but it has only been a week and a half and I know it takes some time to work. Should I admit myself to keep my self sane and safe until the lithium takes effect? Im scared to do it for two reasons...missing classes and because my mom lives far away I don't want her worried and overreacting. I don't know what ti do .. I just want to not feel anything right now!

If you don't feel safe you need to go ahead and go. You can call your mom and check in to assure her you're ok while you're there.

Take care of yourself!!!

From what you wrote I personally would go ahead and admit myself until the meds kicked in. They can monitor you in the hospital and maybe start another med to jump start your recovery.
Most likely they won't keep you too long so you could always return to school with a sick note. People in college take mental health absences all the time (I know I did).
I wouldn't worry about worrying your mom- she would be much more worried if it got out of hand and something bad happened.
Good luck and take care of yourself!

Only you know how you feel.
If you're thinking of the hospital, please, go.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Honestly if you are even considering inpatient you probably need to go. When I even think I might want to go in, I am in serious mental trouble.
As for missing classes, most likely you will end up withdrawing for this semester. Don't worry. You can use hospitalization as your medical reason. Uni or college doesn't even need to know diagnosis or anything. Medical time off is much different than dropping out. That you are admitted to the hospital is all they usually need. Most state unis (i have most experience with) will give you Recovery time too and work with you about how soon you want to return and what about classes you were enrolled in.
But right now you need to focus on getting help for your mental health. Take care of yourself. Your education can pause while you get safe and taken care of.

Thanks everyone for your advice! I was admitted and went in for 8 days and am doing much better! It was very up and down in there but I evened out and had my lithium and seroquel increased and they took me off lamictal (well Im still tapering off). It was an excellent facility and I worked on a lot of other issues I have as well. Im starting outpatient on Monday. My school is hopefully going to help me get caught up in some of my classes and I'm dropping the others!

I'm glad you made the right decision! Your mental health is number one. Can't go to school or make mom alright unless you are healthy and safe first!
