I thought I was done with insomnia a year ago when I started taking Saphris. My pdoc switched me from Paxil to Prozac because I complained of weight gain, plus we switched the night time Saphris to Geodon. Again because I complained of weight gain. I slept four hours last night. Got up at 8am yesterday, and I'm still up at 2am with no sleep in sight. I'm glad we switched meds because my weight was becoming dangerous to my health. I've tried melatonin in the past but it caused RLS, same with Benadryl and all the over the counter sleep aids. Trazodone does nothing to me. In fact it's really hard to sedate me. Any suggestions on what to do, or what to ask my pdoc for?

The only surefire thing I know is Xanax. Which I wouldn't suggest to my worse enemy.
I'm taking Vistaril now. With a trace of Xanax still. After a year.
I don't think Vistaril is doing anything, but is not a benzo. No hangover either, like Traz.
Sleeping 5 to 6 hrs now. Not bad for bipolar. It's just a suggestion. I'm not a medical professional. It's better than melatonin fer sure. Good luck.

Gabapentin? I'm practically unsedatable and this combined with clozaril (which is supposed to be really sedating but does not put me to sleep at all, just makes me tired all the time) has me asleep between 10:30-11:30 every night and I sleep until something wakes me or I've been asleep for 10-12 hours. (That part is the clozaril).

I take 600 PRN twice a day (never need that much though so usually 100 prn with the clozaril in my system) but a bigger dose at night (1200 mg). In the hospital I was taking 600 mg twice a day and 1800 mg at night.

Maybe a low dose of Seroquel (say, 25mg)? It isn't a therapeutic dose for BP, but it can work as a sleep aid.
Thanks for this!

Thank you Rose. I'm going to drink some chamomile tea tonight, and listen to,a self guided meditation on YouTube to relax tonight. If I still have problems sleeping I'll call my pdoc tomorrow, and see what he wants to do. Thank you everyone for the good suggestions. I really appreciate it.

Yeah chamomile tea is good and so are those guided meditations. Maybe invest in some lavender too. Hope you sleep.

Hope your pdoc has answers. I've tried everything to get here but finally have meds that consistently get me sleep. Fortunately my pdoc never gave up trying. Sleep wasn't the biggest issue (it wasn't the 5th issue) when clozaril became my only option for meds but it has been nice and it should remain effective.

I hope you find something. Have you done the Lunesta/Rozeram/ambien/Sonata? Lunesta was pretty good for me for a while. I think Sonata was too but that was a while back.

We eventually decided that valium was a better idea than not sleeping at all. I'm very sensitive to it so needed only a tiny dose and it got me to sleep during my 2 year long severe mixed/depressed epiosde. Not ideal but I took/take? (I suppose I could need it) it intermittently and it did get me sleep. Last ditch effort but it took a while to get the clozaril set up.

I'm up too but that's because I have bronchitis or something and asthma and my asthma meds keep me awake. I did get a few hours a couple times and once my breathing treatment jitters wear off I'll sleep until time for my next dose of cough syrup. It's narcotic so it does get me to sleep until it wears off and I start all over.

Sorry to hear you have bronchitis. I hope you feel better very soon. I haven't had a sinus infection in over a year. I called my pdoc first thing this morning. He prescribed Trazodone, which I taken before , and I don't remember it working , but I'll try it again. Not sure what strength he's giving me yet. I'm not too hopeful, but we'll see. Thanks for the reply. If this doesn't work I'll talk to him about one of the others you suggested.
