In an attempt to get rid of some intrusive thoughts, I gradually switched from Abilify to Latuda over the course of the past six months. I went off the Abilify completely a month or so ago, thinking the Latuda was a change for the better, but I've struggled ever since. Yesterday, while talking with my doctor, he asked when I was taking the Latuda. I said a few hours after eating dinner. He replied that that was much too late, and that I had to take it with my meal. Otherwise, it wouldn't get absorbed properly.
I'm going to stick with the Latuda for another week or so, this time taking it with dinner, before giving up on it and going back to Abilify. He said I should feel better immediately. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

I would give it a try, I actually take my Latuda without food about 9 PM because it completely knocks me out so when I took it with dinner I was asleep by 8 and awake at 3 am so I made the switch...maybe that's why I'm on such a high dose and it took so long to feel better...??..

Yeah, you *really* need to take Latuda with food. The instructions say you need to take it with at least 350 calories in order for it to be fully absorbed. Since the stomach digests food within 2-4 hours, taking Latuda 3 hours after a meal is not going to work well. By then, your stomach has either completely digested everything *or* it's almost done digesting. Either way, you won't have 350 calories worth of food in your stomach.
Personally, I say you should give Latuda at least 2 weeks to work. For some people, it takes a day to work. For others (like me) it takes about 10 days (i.e., a week and a half). So, it varies. I like to eat my dinner late... like around 7:30 or 8:00 pm. That's when I take my Latuda. If I eat an early dinner, then I eat half of it and save the other half as a "snack" so that I have something to eat with my Latuda. Hope that helps ![]() |

As someone mentioned, you need to take latuda with 350 calories. I was told that if you don't, it won't work. That was a problem for me because I often can't eat for various reasons (stomach upset and food phobia things). I kept those power protein shakes and would throw in peanut butter and banana. It kept me eating for awhile until I began to sense the puss in it. I could never take the med at a certain time of day because it depended on my stomach pain. On a positive latuda seem to have a decent affect for sometime. My doctors nurse told me people have great results on it. Just make sure to eat food.

My ip dr told me a piece of fruit would be suffice when taking my 40mg at night. (I take it 3 times a day.)
But...I usually eat something more than that |

I take mine at dinner. I just eat dinner a little later like between 7 and 730pm.

When I was on it, it was very rare that I took it with 350 calories, and it was still a very effective med for me. Usually I'd just eat a Luna bar or yogurt and it was fine.
