I think I suffer from this and I'm speaking about the gym. I have an awesome workout plan that has me run sprints for a minute after every set I lift but I get pretty anxious about it and don't end up doing it. I know it's a tough workout but possible. Anybody have any hints on how to overcome this performance anxiety?

Change it if it's not working. I used to do circuit weight training. I'd do a yoga stretch between machines.

Don't sprint. Jog instead.

I think your first step is to identify what, specifically, is causing the anxiety. For example, are you afraid of what other people will think of you? Are you afraid you're going to mess up? Are you afraid something embarrassing will happen?

I go to the gym pretty regularly...

I mess up a lot. There are lots of people watching me because I'm usually taking a class, and the instructor usually calls me out on it in front of everybody. So, all the attention is on me.

At first I was pretty anxious, but then I realized they didn't care. I used to think they cared, but they literally didn't even remember that I messed up unless I told them. I'd see them in class the next day and they didn't care. In fact, they messed up a lot too. I wasn't the only one who messed up.

If you mess up, that's okay. You're not the only one. Besides, we all start off as beginners. We all know what it's like to mess up.

Even though I've messed up and done plenty of embarrassing things, I've still managed to make some "gym friends". We laugh at all the embarrassing things we messed up on.

In some ways, I think it's better to mess up. I don't like talking to people who are "too perfect". Perfection intimidates me. I think perfection intimidates a lot of other people too.
