So, the other night I had a manic episode at a party at a friends house. She knows about me being bipolar and seemed accepting of it. Now she is mad at me. I immediately apologized to her the next morning, but it seems it wasn't enough. I said that I was sorry I took everyones attention when they were wanting to have a nice relaxing evening. I didn't take responsibility for having a manic episode because there wasn't anything I could do. I had all my meds and everything. I think she wants me to say that I won't let it happen again, or that I'm sorry for the things I did while manic (nothing terrible, just running around a lot). What is the right thing to do??????

mania doesn't just happen out of the blue. Have you been having symptoms during the day or week prior to the event? Maybe your meds are not right. Were you drinking? That could have contributed to your hypomania.

Don't say you're not responsible.

Do you feel shame? Are you still manic or is your mood still unstable (it's technically not an episode if it was one evening/day)?

Thanks for all your helpful responses. I have been on the manic side starting a few weeks ago, and I did have some wine that night ( something I often do without a problem ). I was recently started on a med that is known to mess up your psych med balance in some people, and I think that includes me. I was uncontrolable manic that night and calmed some with my eve meds.

Anyway, I really don't want to loose her as a friend, but I don't want to beg for forgiveness for something I couldn't control. Maybe you are right that it just takes time. Earning trust from her when I can't even trust my manic episodes seems hopeless. I guess that is my main thing, she will see me manic again if we are friends for a long time. How's she going to handle that?

have you put a call into your pdoc? I would tomorrow if you have not. this new med change would have been the reason.
I always apologise for bad behavior. If you care about her then explain further with more sorry's. Just because I am manic doesn't give me cart blanch for forgiveness. It helps to explain my behavior, I don't use it as an excuse, I am still very sorry for what I have done in the past.

If you are unable to control your actions, you may need to be hospitalized to get your meds straightened out. That is what I would do.

Thanks again. You guys are right. It's the weekend and I can trust my husband to call 911 if I really go off the deep end again. I'll get a lot done. I left a message for an asap call from the pdoc when he comes in on Mon. I think this is an ok plan. I also have some clonipin I can take to help slow me down (keep forgettinig about that). Your help helped me get perspective on this from both sides.

I did apologize and explain and apologize profusely. A couple days later she forgave me. The tonic of time...I am NOT a patient person! So we are good on that front too. Thanks, thanks, thanks!
